Napoleon Bonaparte TERRILL [Parents] was born in 1813. He died in 1893. Napoleon married Minerva OLDHAM on 20 Sep 1881.

If information is correct, he married for the first time at age 68. There is therefore no way of estimating the age of his wife accurately. In 11/99, I received this email, with no name:

"i am granddaugther of ella terrill benskin. her father was william henry terrill ,born 7may 1862. we are searching for infor. on his parents, napoleon b. terrill and wife. would apreciate any infor. my e-mail is

Mary F. MEGILL was born about 1825. She married Jerome Bonaparte TERRILL on 15 Nov 1848.

Dicken gives middle initial as "P." and last name as "McGill"

They had the following children:

F i Ida TERRILL was born in 1852. She died in 1867 in Caldwell Co., MO and was buried in Terrill Family Cem..
M ii Walter TERRILL was born in 1854. He died in 1862 in Caldwell Co., MO and was buried in Terrill Family Cem..

Robert TYRRELL [Parents] was born about 1594 in Reading, Birkshire, England. He died on 12 Jun 1643 in Reading, Berkshire, England. Robert married Jane BALDWIN on 29 Jun 1617 in St. Giles Parish, Reading, England. He had other parents.

From the "Terrell Trails": "The legatees of the will of Robert Tirroll of Reading, Clothier, dated 1643, were his wife Jane, his sons, Robert, Richmond, William, Timothy & John, his daughters Marie & Margaret. He had married Jane Baldwin in Reading, St. Giles on 29th june 1617. There appears little doubt that these three brothers, David, Francis & Robert were the sons of William of West Hagbourne."

Jane BALDWIN was born in 1595/1599 in Reading, Birkshire, England. She died on 30 Jan 1661/1662 in Reading, Birkshire, England. Jane married Robert TYRRELL on 29 Jun 1617 in St. Giles Parish, Reading, England.

They had the following children:

M i John TERRILL was born on 25 Jun 1618 in Reading, , , England and was christened on 25 Jun 1618 in Reading, , , England. He died on 13 Mar 1661 in Reading, , , England.

His will was dated 1 Mar 1661, proved 27 Mar, 1661. It names his sister Margaret and her husband Thomas Warner as executor and executrix. Also names his brothers Robert, William, and Richmond, and sister Mary (a widow), late mother deceased, Uncle Richard Hunt of Reading, malster, and cousin Robert Terrell of Reading. From "Terrell Genealogy" by Emma Dicken, The Naylor Company, San Antonio, Texas.
M ii Robert TERRILL was born on 14 Nov 1619 in Reading, , , England. He died in 1677 in , , , England.

Will proved 23 Nov. 1677. He leaves most of his land to "Cosen Robert Alpen", and other money to John Alpen and to "Cosen Mary Alpen", and to sister Mary Mew. Mentions the fact that brothers were in Virginia. No mention of wife or children. Robert became a "merchant of London" He carried on considerable trade with the colonists of Virginia, and made regular voyages to America where he personally transacted business. There are several items in the York County Virginia records where he witnesses deeds and other transactions, the earliest about 18 feb 1646/7, and others in 1647, 1650, and 1662. In the court orders of Charles City County (Virginia) it was mentioned that Robert Terrell served on a jury of inquest 16 March 1662 when a Negro was drowned. Robert was of St. Nicholas Cole Abbey, a parish between St. Paul's Cathedral and the river Thames, where he owned some property. The following was from William and Mary Quarterly:

"7th March 1656-7. Robert Terrell of London, Merchant, landed at Dover the 6th present out of the honor of London from Virginia and came to London last night and lodgeth at ye house of William Terrill Grocer in Thames street in the parish of little Alhallows and saith that his business is in a way of merchandizing to and from Virginia."

I suppose that William Terrill was a "Grocer" and that was not his surname.

The article then states, "Robert Terrell was a resident of York County, and was probably a kinsman of Richmond Terrell of that county, living in 1660, who was the founder of a well-known Virginia family. The above was found at:

M vii Charles TERRILL was born in 1627 in Reading, , , England and was christened on 9 Nov 1627 in Reading, , , England. He died on 28 Sep 1629 in Reading, , , England.
  M viii William TERRILL
  M ix Timothy TERRELL

Richmond TERRILL II [Parents] was born about 1653 in , New Kent Co., Virginia. He married Mary WATERS.

There is no doubt, according to Dicken, that there was a Richmond III. She says that there was probably another son, William, and possibly a daughter who married an Allen, and most likely some other children.

Mary WATERS was born about 1656. She married Richmond TERRILL II.

One source gives her name as Susannah Waters.

They had the following children:

  M i Richmond TERRILL III

William TERRILL [Parents] was born in 1659 in , New Kent Co., Virginia. He died on 2 Apr 1744 in St Paul's Parish, Hanover Co., Virginia. William married Susannah WATERS.

Lived in Hanover Co., VA and Albemarle Co., VA. His father is in dispute... was either William Terrill or his brother, Richmond Terrill. Emma Dicken in her book of some years ago, "Terrell Genealogy", devotes the entire chapter 4 to William. She offers convincing proof that he is the brother of Timothy and Richmond. As always, she quotes many sources in her research. She says that he first appears in the Quit Rent Rolls of New Kent in 1704 as owner of 400 acres of land, evidently in the section which became Hanover in 1720 (on the Pamunkey River). A descendent, John Dabney Terrill (1773-1850), son of Col. Harry Terrill, in his last years wrote from memory of his line and stated that William was the parent of his grandfather, Joel Terrill, and William's son's were James, John, Joel, and Timothy, and he had also some unnamed daughters. Dicken says that William was "on the south side of the Pamunkey River, just above or below the junction of the North and South Anna Rivers, and not far from the town of Hanover, in what was often referred to in those days as "the forks". William is found in court records and in the Vestry Book of St. Pauls Parish. His approximate year of death is readily determined as he appears in the records in 1743 and is mentioned as deceased in records in 1744. He may have had a dtr., Susan or Susannah, who m. John Brooks and went to Bladen Co., N.C. as early as 1735; their son Isaac Brooks m. Ruth Terrill dtr. of Timothy Terrill and family tradition is that Isaac and Ruth were first cousins.

Timothy Terrill moved to Bladen Co., N.C. about 1743 and he and John Brooks were associated. It has been further suggested that William and Susannah had another dtr. Mary, who m. Matthew Mills, as Henry Terrill and Matthew were associated in some business and Matthew had a son, William Terrill Mills. There are no authentic records of the birth of any of William's children.

The below is on reportedly on him:

"Today I sit down to write from chaos. The reminiscences of men and things so long ago must in some things be the work of chance. Sometime in the latter part of the sixteenth century, William Terrell must have emigrated from England to America. He settled, lived, and died in Hanover county, Va., on Pamunkey, a small river passing between Richmond and Fredericksburg into the Rappahannock. The peninsula formed by the stream and the Potomac forms the Northern Neck of Virginia, The Potomac dividing Virginia from Maryland.

Having no family register, I cannot know whom he married or whether he came to the Colonies a married or single man. He was a tall, long, hungry, coarse man, with bones vastly wanting of flesh, black hair and eyes, brows like tow conjugal owls, mouth like the poor man's louse, and a nose like an elephant's proboscis, one whole foot long. His voice was hard, keen, and loud, and bursted forth like the very elements with an unearthly sepulchral tone; and when irritated to its tip, little mean and crippled devils might tremble. I have seen old Sam (a slave?) compress his gaunt frame and mock his shivering voice. Was it a misty night when the shrill voice struck you, one's flesh would weld to the bones like dried beef, or make one feel runnish all over. Than him the very house of mourning could not beat him, the shambles was not much power for his bed was a cowhide on the ground under a mulberry, sheltered from the broad Heavens. There and thus he and his wife dug the ground, made tobacco, bought Africans very low and became independent. He was honest and respectable, but his command came to his square, and so did others, or all dealings broke. Of his daughters I remember nothing. His sons, of whom I have heard, were James, John, Joel and Timothy. John lived in Granville, Co. N.C. as did Timothy in Chatham,......."

William patented several hundred acres over time, in King William County, VA., around Polecat Swamp. Some in 1716, 1717, 1718 and some earlier.

He was listed as deceased as of April 2, 1744.>

Susannah WATERS was born in 1660. She died in 1727. Susannah married William TERRILL.

One source gives her name as "Martha Susannah Waters."

  F ii Mary TERRILL
  M iii David TERRILL
  M iv James TERRILL
  M v Joel TERRILL
  F vi Betty Ann TERRILL
  M vii Henry TERRILL

Richmond TERRILL III [Parents] was born about 1695. He died in 1771 in , , Virginia. Richmond married Catherine CRUMP.

Name is listed in Blisland Parish, New Kent Co., VA. Records show that he had both a son and a grandson named Richmond Terrill (or Terrell), who lived in Louisa Co., VA. His will is in Louisa Co. 1771.

Catherine CRUMP was born about 1700. She married Richmond TERRILL III.

This was posted 12/99 by Jan Meranda

In VIRGINIA WILL RECORDS for Charles City I found mention of Richmond Terrell's wife Catherine:

"According to papers in a chancery suit in Williamsburg, Gregory vs. Terrell's Admrs. (1808) Richmond Terrell's wife was Catherine, daughter of Robert Crump, of New Kent. She married secondly, James Garnett....."

They had the following children:

  M i Richmond TERRILL IV

Richmond TERRILL IV [Parents] was born about 1720 in , , Virginia. He died in 1765 in , , Virginia. Richmond married Ann "Nancy" OVERTON about 1742 in , , Virginia.

Lived in Louisa Co., VA, which was created from the northern part of Hanover in 1742; therefore, this is probably land his father acquired. He was so aristocratic that he was nicknamed, "The Duke". There is a will of a John Tait (Ellsberry is notoriously bad on typos in her Newsletter and I never believe the spelling of any word unless it is written twice, which this one was not) dated 20 Nov, 1768, witnessed by Anne Terrill, Mary O. Terrill (age 18...is that legal?), Richmond Terrill, and James Hill. The Terrills are all children of this Richmond IV; I don't know where the Tait (?) and Hill connection is.

Ann "Nancy" OVERTON was born in 1725. She died in 1795. Ann married Richmond TERRILL IV about 1742 in , , Virginia.

Her will was dated 29 July 1790 and proved 8 june 1795. Though her name was Ann, she was frequently called "Nancy", which was a nickname for Ann.

They had the following children:

M i Richmond M. TERRILL was born about 1743. He died in 1771.

Died unmarried. Will written 1 Nov 1771 mentions his grandfather Richmond, who died before 8 Aug that same year (1771) when the death was mentioned in a friend's letter. (Dicken)
  F ii Elizabeth TERRILL
  F iii Anne TERRILL
  F iv Mary Overton TERRILL
M v James TERRILL was born about 1752.

See notes under James Terrill (#2857)
There is a James Terrell of VA who is listed as a Rev. War ancestor of Miss Celeste Terrell of Toccoa Chap. D.A.R., Toccoa, GA.
  M vi William TERRILL
  F vii Barbara Overton TERRILL
  M viii Richard TERRILL
M ix Samuel TERRILL was born about 1761. He died in 1798.

Both Elizabeth and Frederick were descendants of Co. William Overton.

Elizabeth TERRILL [Parents] was born about 1745 in , , Virginia. She died in , , Virginia. Elizabeth married Frederick HARRIS before 31 Oct 1764.

Had five sons: Richmond, Richard, Charles, George, and Frederick. Also had dtrs.: Ann O. (Holladay) and Jemima (Harris)...Jemima m. her cousin Overton Harris 16 Sep 1789 and Ann m. Thomas Holladay.

Zachary LEWIS Col. was born on 6 May 1731. He died on 21 Jul 1803. Zachary married Anne TERRILL on 8 May 1771.

Educated at William and Mary College. After completing his education, he accompanied General Washington, and remained with him for sometime at old Fort Cumberland in 1755. I don't know if this is George or his brother, who was also a general.

Anne TERRILL [Parents] was born on 3 Sep 1748. She died on 3 Nov 1820. Anne married Zachary LEWIS Col. on 8 May 1771.
