FROM EMPORIA GAZETTE, FEBRUARY 16, 1901, REPRINTED IN THE AMERICUS GREETING, FEBRUARY 21, 1901:

John Terrel was killed this afternoon near the junction by Santa Fe passenger train No. 5. Mr. Terrel is a man about 65 years old. He was engaged in picking up coal when he was struck by the train and killed. No one saw the accident but the engineer of the train. Just east of the junction is a curve in the track. The train came around this at a good rate of speed and though the engineer saw the man on the track he was unable to stop the train in time to avoid the accident. Terrel was picking up coal and was stooping over. He neither saw the train nor heard it until it was to late.

The train stopped and the conductor and two women climbed off and looked at the man. People near, hearing the engine whistle an alarm and then seeing the train stop, ran to the track. The conductor left the body in charge of these men and went on to the depot. The Santa Fe officers telephoned the sheriff and coronor and they went to the scene of the accident.

Mr. Terrel lived at 221 East St. and leaves a wife. He is said to have been a brother-in-law of Lewis Powell and also of Wm. Bushman. The body was put in charge of an undertaker and taken to his establishment. An examination showed that his face was mashed and broken and both legs crushed. - Emporia Gazette, Feb. 16
