Came to Missouri in 1832, Paul Christian entering land and improving a farm in Randolph (County, Missouri), where he remained until his death in 1851." He had 12 children, according to Madeline Swetnam, who listed them for me as given here.

William Sutton CHRISTIAN [Parents] was born on 2 Feb 1817 in Kentucky. He died in 1891. William married Mary Elizabeth TERRILL on 8 Oct 1850 in Randolph Co., MO.

Found on the 1880 Randolph Co. Census at:

https://sites.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mo/randolph/census/1880/105-07.gif

Reference "History of Randolph and Macon Counties, 1881", states that Wm. was "a native of Scott County, Kentucky" and gives birthdate and parents. It also gives wife and lists their children and the children's spouses:

"Old Families of Randolph County, Missouri"
too. The entry is by Dorothy Jane Christian Thornburg.

William Sutton Christian was born in Kentucky and came to Randolph County, Missouri with his parents. He married Mary Elizabeth Terrill in October 1850. Their son John James began working as a young boy making railroad ties (by hewing them from whole logs), and he later sold the city of Moberly its first team of horses to use at the fire station. He was a deacon at Central Christian Church fo many years, and was a Road Commissioner of the 8 Mile Road District. John James Christian married Hannah Martin, and was successful in accumulating much property. Their children were William Sutton and Geneva Christian. William Sutton married Lucille Marshall and they lived on the home farm just south of Moberly throughout their married life. The home place was the scene of many happy family reunions. Their children: Dorothy Jane, who married Jim K. Thornburg, who is Chief Dispatcher for the Norfolk and Western Railroad in Moberly. The Thornburgs live very near the old home. William Sutton, Dorothy Jane' brother, is a Lieutenant-Colonel in the U.S. Air Force and lives in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Her second brother, Kenneth Marshall Christian is retired from the U.S. Coast Guard and now lives in Port Angeles, Washington.

The previous entry that I quoted parts from established William Sutton as the son of Paul and Polly Sutton Christian. The entry says William Sutton was
born Feb 2, 1817 and died in 1891 (and also mentions his marriage to Mary Elizabeth Terrill). Carole Brace [email protected] 12/98

Mary Elizabeth TERRILL was born on 2 Nov 1832 in , Greenup Co., Kentucky. She died on 11 Feb 1912 in Moberly, Randolph Co., Missouri. Mary married William Sutton CHRISTIAN on 8 Oct 1850 in Randolph Co., MO.

"History of Randolph and Macon Counties, 1881" says that she was born in Kentucky but grew up and was educated in Missouri, and lists children and their spouses. She is not shown in the family on 1850 Randolph Co. MO census, having been married in Oct. of 1850.

John Marshall YATES was born on 29 Jul 1796 in , , Virginia. He died on 12 Nov 1872 in , , Missouri. John married Virginia CHRISTIAN on 8 May 1818 in , , Virginia.

Other marriages:
TERRILL, Elizabeth

For his Yates line back, switch over to my Wayland Genealogy page.

Believed to be the same John Marshall Yates who m. Virginia Christian (born 22 May 1800, died 1841 after giving him 12 children). A note in another source says that John Yates was the "ancestor of Weechie (Yates) Estill, a Terrill historian who supplied data for book by Inez Doshier". Source #1830 says that the last child of Va. Christian was b. 1841 (she died in childbirth?) and was named William Viley (Wiley?) Yates. Notes are unclear, but it appears that it indicates that John had 8 more children by his second wife Eliz. Terrill (Parker).

The following from newspaper may be his grandson:

Kinzer, James William -- d. 22 Mar 1880, aged 25y, at Red Bluff, Contra
Costa Co., (CA I think), struck in the temple by a baseball in a game, b.
Rand. Co, g-son of the late John M. Yates & nepher of the late John Kinzer, sister Mrs William Dukes lives near Martinez, James was a saddler by trade;
THH 15 Apr 1880

I received this in 4/99, which was quite helpful and I added children:

Noted your ref. to John Marshall Yates and his wife Virginia Christian.
According to my research their daughter Sarah Elizabeth, born 1833(stated
in her book of poems; 1850 census states her birth as 1840 in Clinton
Twn in Randolph Co. MO) married George Washington Hunt. Sarah Elizabeth
was a well known poet and I have a book of her poems which will go to the
Huntsville Historical Society. She was a member of the Mt Shiloh
Missionary Baptist Church near Darksville, MO estab. in 1852. Her 3
brothers fought in the Confederate Army - Dr. Paul Christian Yates, Dr.
Willie Viley Yates, Robert Arthur (killed at Kennesaw Mt. Georgia, June
27, 1864. Her sisters were Virginia Yates McCanne, Ann Mary Yates
Kinser, eldest sister, who went to CA in 1849 & died there during the
Cholera epidemic. Her cousin Reuben Yates, (brother of Gov Richard Yates
of ILL) was killed at the battle of Prairie Grove, Arkansas.
