Just found this site and have lots to learn but I am researching George Whitfield Terrell relations. My husband is his ggggrandson. He settled in East Texas and I have been to his gggrandson home. My sister in law has
letters Sam Houston wrote to him when he was Indian Commisioner. There are articles about his carrerr and other notable East Texas Terrells in The New Texas Handbook online.

The Cherokee County Historical society has a book with a lot of interesting articles and facts but now that I have been reading in this site I am really confused an will have to sort out what they make reference to. It starts with Robert Terrell of Reading England/Jane Baldwin m June 29 1627. Richard Terrell emigrated from VA in 1656. William Tereel b. in New Kent Co. Henry Terrell lived in Carline Co. VA (who is he) as did David Terrell grandson of WIlliam and Susanah. Edward Terrell son of David belived to be the father of James Terrell born near Lynchburg VA went to Tenn. and m. Penelope Adams on June 16, 11798, lived in Ky then moved to Boonville MO where he died in 1834. Their children Capt. Robert Adams Terrell founded Terrell, TX in 1873, Christoper J. Terrell, Susanah Terrell who married henry Carlton and George Whitfield Terrell. The latter was the father of James E. Terrell and Sam Houston Terrell who married Julia Butler. They were the parents of James, Walter and George Butler Terrell (also in the handbook of TX) George Butler Terrell married Allie M. Turney of Turney TX. Their kids were Burena Aylita, George Whitfield (Whit), Emma Carey, Mary (Mary Terrell Brill) and Lewis Guinn (my husbans grandfather).

Would like to make sense of all the differences I have found.

TERRELL, GEORGE WHITFIELD (1803-1846). George Whitfield Terrell, early settler, jurist, and diplomat, was born in Nelson County, Kentucky, in 1803, the son of Col. James Terrell. As a youth he moved to Tennessee, where he was admitted to the bar in 1827 and in 1828 was appointed district attorney by Sam Houston, then governor of Tennessee. Terrell was Houston's attorney general when Houston resigned the governorship. He served in the Tennessee legislature from 1829 to 1836 and moved to Mississippi, where he met financial reverses that caused him to move to Texas in 1837. Mirabeau B. Lamarqv appointed him district attorney of San Augustine County in 1840; he later served as district judge. Terrell was secretary of state of the Republic of Texas under David G. Burnetqv for a short time in 1841 and in December 1841 was made attorney general of the republic by Sam Houston. From 1842 to 1844 Terrell was Indian commissioner and as such negotiated the Indian treaty at Bird's Fort on September 29, 1843. He was appointed charg d'affaires to France, Great Britain, and Spain in December 1844 and continued in that capacity under President Anson Jones. Upon his return to Texas in 1845, Terrell was again made Indian commissioner. He was known as an opponent of annexation. He died on May 13, 1846.
