Joseph Monroe BISHOP was born about 1772. He married Jane TERRILL on 28 Sep 1793 in , Orange Co., Virginia.

Jane TERRILL [Parents] was born on 4 Apr 1774 in , , Virginia. She married Joseph Monroe BISHOP on 28 Sep 1793 in , Orange Co., Virginia.

They had the following children:

M i James Terrill BISHOP was born about 1796.
  M ii Jonathan BISHOP
  F iii Mary BISHOP
iv Frances Willis BISHOP was born about 1802.

Not known if male or female. The spelling for Frances is for female, but the name Willis is a male name. There is a Frances Bishop (#2758) born somewhere around 1813 who m. Benjamin Terrill (#2739), and this could possibly be the same as this Frances, if this is a female. Benjamin is first cousin to #3717, but marriages between first cousins were fairly common in those days.
  M v Joseph BISHOP

James TERRILL [Parents] was born on 22 Jan 1779 in , , Virginia. He died in 1834 in Boonville, , Missouri. James married Penelope ADAMS on 16 Jun 1798 in Boonville, , Missouri.

Got this email:

"Thanks for your attempt at help. If had gotten the first names right -- it would have helped you. Barbaras' sister was married to a Robert Jones GILCHRIST. Barbara was married to George Whitfield TERRELL.

I have gotten undocumented information that George Whitfield TERRELL's - Father and mother was James TERRELL, 1-22-1779, born near Lynchburg,
Virginia, d abt 1871; married Penealope ADAMS 6-16-1798 children listed for James TERRELL and Penealope ADAMS as:

1) George Whitfied TERRELL, a lawyer, b 1809, (?); Attorney General in TN,
came to TX in 1840; he had a close association with Sam HOUSTON. He was married to Barbara Culp, (date) unk. He died 13 May 1846.

I think his wife Barbara (CULP) may have died????because I found a marriage record in a book Compiled by Edythe Rucker Whitley, Baltimore Genealogical Publishing Co., Inc. 1982 - Marriages of GIBSON County Tennesse 1824-1860. George W. TERRILL to Ann BELL, Sept 5, 1839. (Sept 5, 1839). James M. TERRILL, BM.

I do know that he had a wife by the name of Ann who came to TX, what
happened to wife Barbara between 1833 and his marriage to Ann Bell in 1839.
(I located a marriage of Mrs. Ann TERRELL 7/23/1849 in Cherokee County, TX
to a J. C. Harrison. (George Whitfield TERRELL died in 1846 in Houston
County, TX).

The reason that I know he was married to Barbara (Culp) is because he and Barbara are listed in a court document in 1833 (I have a copy) where they;
and one of Barbaras' sister Drucilla (CULP) GILCHRIST was listed along with
6 of their minor brothers and sisters. Their Father Daniel CULP , died in
May 1833, GIBSON County, TX.

I believe George Whitfield Terrell and Barbara may have had one son named
James TERRELL, born abt 1831, in TN - This James TERRELL shows up on an 1850 Cherokee County, TX census record living with Barbara CULP's brother Daniel
D. Culp. It shows him as 19 years old and born in TN, and a student (his father had died in 1846).

Since, I have gotten my material and information straight, do you have any information that would help resolve who his wives were and who his children might be?

2) Capt. Robert Adams TERRELL (b 2-22-1820 and died 3-8-1881 in Terrell,
Texas. He was the founder of Terrell, Texas. Married Emily LOVE.

3) Dr. Christian TERRELL (born and died no dates). Married (?)

4) Susan/Susannah TERRELL (no dates of birth or death). Married (?)

Any help is greatly appreciated."

Thank you,

Penelope ADAMS [Parents] was born about 1779 in , Campbell Co., Virginia. She married James TERRILL on 16 Jun 1798 in Boonville, , Missouri.

I got this email 3/99 and, as a result, have placed Penelope as a child of this: couple. This is pure conjecture, and needs to be investigated and proven.

Re Robert Adams m. Mary Lewis Terrell. HIs death date in 1790.
Died while visiting sister Mildred Ward. You are missing two of the
children,
Penelope Adams b. abt 1786, named in Will.
Mary Terrell Adams b. 1787 supposviely never married. Also named in will

Re George Adams (Judge) m. _____ Wissiger. He married Ann Weisiger from Louisville KY, d/o of Daniel
RE Milly Adams m. _ Webb. She married George Webb of Amherst Co.

Mary Lewis Terrell Adams moved to Amherst Co after the death of Capt Robert Adams in 1790. There she raised the younger of the 12 living children.
Mary Lewis Terrell Adams (wife of Robert Adams died 5 Oct 1852 in Cambpell
Co Va.

I am REALLY curious about the Penelope Adams you have b. abt 1779 m. James Terrell
Adams, Penelope (~1779 - ) - female
b. Abt 1779
spouse: Terrill, James (1779 - ~1871)
- m. 18 Jun 1798
----------child: Terrill, George Whitfield (~1809 - 1846)
----------child: Terrill, Susannah "Susan" (~1813 - )
----------child: Terrill, Christian (~1815 - )
----------child: Terrill, Robert Adams (1820 - 1881)

If I have from granddaughters of Robert Adams and set forth in a manuscript done in early 1900 stated Penelope never married, but I had some doubt about that. Here we have a Penelope Adams m. to a Terrell in 1798 and with a
child, Robert Adams Terrell. Do you know where you found that info. I think this is the Penelope, one in the same. Do you have a place of marriage?
There is almost no way for one to be named Penelope Adams and with a child named Robert Adams for her not to be the daughter of Robert Adams and Mary Lewis Terrell. I see you don't have parents for her. I wonder.
Just food for thought?
Karen

They had the following children:

One correspondent (Harold Flick, 5672 Balkan Court SW, Ft. Myers, FL 33919) says "Boone County, Kty. records show George as marrying first Jane Willis
and then Elizabeth Willis. He is also shown as representing 'Mrs. Willis' when Mary 'Polly' Willis m. John Grant on 16 Feb, 1820." Mr. Flick was trying to trace the Willis line to Virginia in this 8/96 correspondence.

Jane WILLIS [Parents] was born about 1790. She married George CORNELIUS on 10 Aug 1814.

Peter RUCKER was born about 1740 in , Orange Co., Virginia. He died on 5 May 1794 in , Greene Co., Virginia. Peter married Elizabeth TERRILL.

One source gives his father as Angus Rucker, Rev. War veteran. However, I feel that the more accurate source is "History of Rucker Family" by Mrs. E.J. Whitley, 1927, pp 10,99, which lists this father, John Rucker. Quite often persons interested in D.A.R. membership are too quick to put Rev. War veterans in their lineage.

Elizabeth TERRILL [Parents] was born about 1742 in , , Virginia. She married Peter RUCKER.

Four children are listed in Robert's will as "children of my deceased daughter, Elizabeth. One son (Reuben) married daughter of Elizabeth's brother Edmund (Mary Foster Terrill)

Margaret TERRILL [Parents] was born on 18 Aug 1790 in , , Virginia. She died in 1865 in , , California. Margaret married Allen POAGE on 2 Jun 1805 in , Greenup Co., Kentucky.

Ellsberry says that this family later moved to Indiana and Illinois and had a large family. One child was Malinda (or Matilda) Poage as listed. Other child, George, is courtesy of a descendant: Stacy L. Cronin, PO Box 270842, Nashville, TN 37227-0842, who wrote me in 8/94.

They had the following children:

  F i Malinda POAGE
  M ii George Terrel POAGE

George C. TERRILL [Parents] was born about 1792 in Culpeper Co., Virginia. He died before 1834 in Boone Co., Kentucky. George married Nancy CAVE on 5 Nov 1816 in Boone Co., Kentucky.

Had a daughter who married a Parker.

The below came from Larry Miller [email protected] in 3/99 on his nephew Arthur:

"Arthur was also in the Confederate 5th Kentucky Cavalry, Company F, inthe Civil War. He was captured and held prisoner at Camp Douglas, Chicago. The Captain for Company F was George TERRILL. I believe this is the George W. TERRILL that served in the Kentucky legislature at a point in time after the Civil War (based on a brief biographical sketch I have read). I also believe that George was Arthurs uncle, brother of Reuben."

If his age estimate is accurate, this would not be possible as this George would have been 65 years old when war started in 1860.

Unknown if these children are his...see note under Joshua.

A recent post stated that he died before 1834 in ? Boone Co., KY. His father John was made guardian of his three orphan children: Edmund, William & Louisa in Sep 1834.

Received this 9/99 from :

"From Boone County Court, Kentucky, Guardian & Administrator Bonds 1820-1856, page 413. John Terrill was appointed guardian of his son George's infant orphans Wm. E, Edm' and Louisa Terrill. Dated September 4, 1834.

I also have probate record from Howard Co MO that lists Edmund C and Louisa (Terrill) wife of Garrett Allen as brother & sister of the deceased William E. Terrill. (Maria Louisa TERRILL is her full name.) I have marriage records for Edmund & Louisa; I believe that William E. was never married. Evidently these were the only children of George C. & Nancy (CAVE) Terrill. As you may know, Edmund C. Terrill was a witness to the prenuptial agreement of John Terrill & Mary (LACY) (TERRILL) TERRILL. I believe that he signed in the place of his deceased father George (who was John's eldest son).

I sent you info regarding Edmund's marriage to Ann Elizabeth Cruse in Howard Co MO previously. Their daughter Nancy Louisa TERRILL married Fountain FOX - their son John William FOX Sr. married Emma Louise DREW - their son John William FOX Jr. married Madonna Mae TAYLOR - they were my parents.

Goldie ANN (FOX) Christian
Columbia, Missouri"
