says: "Tolliver Terrell came to the front solely by the force of his
own personality - being a man of strong native ability, great physical strength, and unquestioned courage. It was said he feared absolutely
nothing beneath the sky, man or beast."

"Another story on the authority of one of his daughters: At a
picnic where there was a large crowd, when the long table was spread
loaded with food for which so many hungry mouths were waiting, he
jumped up on that table with his boots on and strode from one end of
it to the other to the dismay and consternation of all present,
especially his own family. Yet such was the fear in which he was held
by reason of his great strength that no one dared to interfere with
him in the midst of this unusual conduct. Nevertheless, good came out
of it. On the same good authority - his daughter - he himself
became so disgusted with his own conduct that day that he mended his
ways and became a different man." He represented Franklin County in

The following is taken from pages 270-1 of Terrell Genealogy,
compiled by Emma Dicken: "A Joel Terrell, sometimes called Joseph
Terrell, lived in Franklin County, NC, in the home formerly owned by
the elder John Terrell.

The will of John Terrell, dated September 20, 1783 in Franklin
County, NC, names Joel Terrell as his son. Joel Terrell's mother was
Elizabeth Harrison, the wife of John Terrell named in his will. Joel
Terrell was one of the executors of his father's will.

It is thought that he was born about 1749. He was married to
Elizabeth Rush, daughter of Benjamin Rush, and his wife, Alice
Grigsby. It is tradition that he was 18 years of age, and she was 16
when they married. It is assumed that the marriage occurred about
1767. Elizabeth Terrell witnessed a deed when Robert Washington sold
land 27 July 1767.

Joel Terrell was a Revolutionary soldier, and proof of his service
has been accepted by the D. A. R. Society. It is tradition that he
was under General Francis Marion, and was one of eight survivors of
one battle.

In Pension Roll, Senate Documents, published 1835, a Joel Terrell,
who must have been the one from Franklin County, under the Act of Apr.
18, 1814 was granted a pension which was retroactive to Dec. 18, 1813.
However, Joel died shortly prior to Feb. 1, 1815 when his estate was administered.

The other Joel Terrell, who lived in Rutherford County, NC, and
had moved there from Albemarle County, VA., was placed on the pension
roll Dec. 27, 1816, under the Act of April 24, 1816. His death
occurred 1819. Both made applications for pension at Raleigh, Wake
County, NC.

In Franklin County, Joel Terrell was appointed Patroler in Myricks
District June term of Court 1787. He had a considerable amount of
property which at his death was divided among his children. His son,
Toliver, was executor and records show that the heirs gave him
receipts for their part of the estate.

In a deed conveying the old home of Joel Terrell to another member
of the family, it was mentioned as the old John Terrell place.
The following is taken from page 87 of the Ayres reference:

Concerning Joel Terrell, Sr., who married Elizabeth Rush, daughter of
Benjamin II and Alice Grigsby, Miss Kelly (Maud McLure Kelly) says:
"Joel Terrell was his right name, as it is given on his daughter's
tombstone. He seems to have been called "Joe", probably to
distinguish him from Joel Terrell of Wake Co. The tombstone
inscription is as follows: "Erected to the memory of Malinda Bledsoe,
consort of Benjamin Bledsoe, and daughter of Joel and Elizabeth
Terrell, was born in Franklin Co., N.C. Dec. 11, 1784 and departed
this life Aug. 3, 1841, aged 56 years, eight months and twenty days."
