Kentucky: A History of the State, Battle, Perrin, & Kniffin, 3rd ed., 1886. Warren County.

JOHN D. BLAKEMAN was born October 24, 1852, in Green County, Ky., and is one of the most active and wide-awake business men in Warren County. He is a son of William J. and Nancy J. (Lasley) Blakeman, who had born to them four sons and three daughters, all of whom lived to be grown. William J. Blakeman was born in August, 1822. He was an extensive farmer and a large slave holder before the war, and was a devoted and active member of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He was a son of Daniel Blakeman, who married Bell Workman, both of Green County. Daniel Blakeman was a substantial farmer and large slave holder, and a member of the Baptist Church; his father was born in eastern Kentucky. The Blakemans came originally from Oxford, England, about 1760, and first settled in New York, and about 1795 located in Kentucky. Mrs. Nancy J. (Lasley) Blakeman was born in Lynchburgh, Va., in 1822; she was a daughter of John and Elizabeth (Terrell) Lasley, of Virginia, and died in 1862. The Lasley family were among the first pioneers of Lynchburgh, Va. They were leading members of the Methodist Episcopal Church, many of them becoming ministers, and were of English and Scotch extraction. John D. Blakeman was reared a farmer and was educated at New Athens College from which he graduated; at the age of sixteen he commenced teaching; at twenty commenced farming. In 1875 he began selling agricultural implements and machinery for Nevill McAy & Co., Louisville; afterward for J. B. Romans, of Nashville. In the fall of 1882 he procured a patent for an improved safety singletree, and commenced its manufacture on a capital of $300. His trade was increased to such an extent that he now has a capital of $10,000 invested. His trade has been extended to nearly every State and Territory in the Union. He also has considerable trade in South America. This is the only factory of this character in the United States. Mr. Blakeman devotes his entire attention to the enterprise and has about twenty men traveling and employed in his shop. He was married, June 25, 1873, to Bell Dishman, of Barren County, Ky., a daughter of Robert C. and Mary W. (Norman) Dishman. Mr. and Mrs. Blakeman have had born to them four children; Claude N., Edith L., William, Robert and Anna B. (deceased). Mr. and Mrs. Blakeman are members of the Methodist Episcopal Church South. He is also a member of the K. of P. and cast his first presidential vote for Tilden.

Henry THURMAN was born about 1773. He married Sarah TERRILL on 15 Jan 1795 in Bedford, VA.

See note under wife about his line.

Sarah TERRILL [Parents] was born on 15 Feb 1775. She married Henry THURMAN on 15 Jan 1795 in Bedford, VA.

DOB is 15 Oct 1775 by a descendant. I received this email 5/99:

...I am contacting you to offer some assistance in helping complete another of your lines if you are interested. In particular, Sarah Terrill/Terrell b 1775, daughter of Edward b 1753. She married Henry Thurman as you know but what you don't know possibly is that they moved to Illinois and some of their children and grandchildren traveled to Oregon on the Oregon Trail and settled all around me.

Last year I discovered a couple of pioneer Thurman graves within about ten
miles of where I live here in Scio, Oregon and that piqued my interest. At
that time I had no knowledge of who they were so I started backtracking
through cemetery records, Oregon land and census records then census records
in Illinois, this just because I was interested in the Thurman name. About 6 months earlier I had started researching my own Thurman line and at the same
time was gathering Thurman names where ever I found them in the belief that
they all connect at some point in time. So I started two different databases, one of my line where I have proven all the information and another where
mostly unproven information is stored.

So far I have traced my own line back to 1795 Bedford Co., VA. with the birth of Jabez Thurman. I still have not proven his parents but I have a lot of
circumstantial evidence that they were Joseph Thurman and Nancy Franklin who
married in 1792 in Bedford Co., VA. Another Joseph Thurman provided surety
for several marriages in Bedford Co during the 1790's. I believe him to be
the father of Joseph who married Nancy. I also believe that Joseph is
probably the father of your Henry Thurmond, this because of the large number
of marriages that Joseph provided surety for and the fact that the Thurmans
being married were about the same ages as could well be brothers and sisters.
This being the case then your Henry is possibly brother to my Jabez. If
that is the case then the Thurmans buried here are my family. Now you
understand my interest in your website.

Anyway, I am in the process of obtaining copies of original documents stored
in the Bedford County Courthouse. These are records from the Court Books
showing entries for your Edward Terrell and my Joseph Thurman. One is an
entry showing:

THURMAN vs TERRELL, EDWARD with five pages of entries, this dated
between 1795-1799. (another reason I believe our families knew each other,
although maybe not in a friendly way. ha). This THURMAN may have been
Benjamin Thurmond/Thurman who was a surveyor in that area during that time
frame.

Are you interested in copies of these records when I get them? Would be
happy to provide them to you.

Also are you interested in what little information I have so far on Henry and Sarah and their descendants? The majority of that info is proven (Oregon
land records, census records, cemetery records ) because I looked it up
myself, some is from a Family TreeMaker cd that was submitted by another
researcher that lives in Portland, Or. I talked extensively with her on the
phone and computer and she swears by the information she submitted and
offered to provide proof to me but at that time I declined because I was
uncertain that I would ever connect with those people. Now I can't get hold
of her for the past week or so, maybe she is on vacation since she is retired.
