Terrill/Terrill/Tyrrell Lines

William TERRILL [Parents] was born about 1725 in , Caroline Co., Virginia. He died in 1797 in , Halifax Co., Virginia. William married Martha COX.

From: [email protected] (Harvey Powers):

"This William Terrell could have been born as early as 1722 or as late
as 1730-32. The earlier date comes from the speculation of John A. Terrell,
Jr. The later date, from Don Terrell ("The Terrell Family," 1988) and is
also offered by Emma Dicken (p.279).

We do know he was married by 1767, because he is mentioned in his
father-in-law's will in that year. John Jr. found that document and
apparently, Don Terrell is unaware of its existance. Don Terrell says
William moved to Halifax about 1777. We are not sure why he picks that
date, but we do know that William is mentioned in the settling of his
(apparent) brother's estate in that year.

Both historians say William died in 1797 in Halifax. John Jr. says
William's son Richard C. died in the same year, after having just moved to
Halifax (from Pittsylvania) to help his father with the father's farm. If
Richard was ill at the time of his father's death, it might be a good
explanation of why William Junior (not Richard) was chosen administrator on
William Senior's will. William Senior's will was written, however, in 1792
and not probated until 16 June 1797.

Both Don Terrell and John Terrell (along with this author) have had
difficulty establishing -- with certainty -- which of several William
Terrell's is Richard's father. Guy Clark of Richmond believes "our" William
was a Quaker minister who moved first to South Carolina, then back to
Bedford County, Virginia, and then into Pittsylvania and Halifax Counties.
Clark believes this is the same William Terrell who administered brother
Dudley's estate in Charlotte County and in mentioned in a land sale to a Mr.
Moore.

Martha COX (daughter of William COX and Catherine KINKY) was born in Orange
County, NC. The records for William Terrell do not name his wife. She
apparently died before him since she is not mentioned in his will. We list
Martha Cox as William's wife because we know her to be Richard C. Terrell's
mother (John A. Terrell, Jr.'s research). And William's death in Halifax
County fits both the location and time for what we know of Richard C.
Terrell's father, William. We also know this William had a son Richard."

The below is found at: http://www.gate.net/~sigmar/ratcliff/terrell.html

"Like his father, Philemon Terrell Jr. served in the military. He served as a Private in Col. Nixon's, Capt. William Spencer's Company of the Infantry, 13th Regiment Mississippi Territory Militia in the War of 1812. Philemon Terrell Jr. served for one month, from January 5 to February 7, 1815. He fought in the famous "Battle of New Orleans", which occurred on 8 January 1815. He was paid $8 for his month of service, and discharged at Marion County, Mississippi.

On 19 January 1815 Philemon Terrell Jr. signed the Petition to Congress, from Camp Pearl River, by the inhabitants of Marion and Lawrence Counties. This petition asked for an extension of time or exception for payment on lands. The petition explained how they were the first settlers of the wilderness, and the war with the Creek nation had left commerce and finances difficult.

Philemon Terrell Jr. lived in Covington County prior to locating on Morgan's Fork of the Homochitta River in Franklin County, Mississippi. Tax records indicate he neighbored the Ratcliff family 1821-1832 in Franklin Co., Mississippi. One old recorded family record, in the possession of the Marler family of Baton Rouge, states the family "lived 20 miles out from Natchez".

By 1840, Philemon Terrell Jr. was living in Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana. Parish records indicate his brother, Malcolm Terrell, was also residing on Bayou Latanache. Philemon Terrell Jr. obtained a patent on 21 April 1845 in Section 9, Township 2, Range 7 west of the Mississippi River. He purchased additional land in Pointe Coupee and obtained another patent on 15 February 1855.

The land of Philemon Terrell Jr. on Big Tree Bayou, according to maps, was located south adjoining the Rice property. The Rice property is where the Brooks and Miglicco families, as well as that of Mrs. Vione Rice.

Old family records indicate Philemon Terrell Jr. died 12 Oct 1864 in Pointe Coupee Parish. He is likely buried in St. Stephen's Episcopal Church Cemetery in an early unmarked grave."

Margaret Ann RATCLIFF was born about 1785. She died in Arkansas. Margaret married Philemon TERRILL Jr..

This page: http://www.gate.net/~sigmar/ratcliff/ratcliff_family.html

Has her Ratcliff heritage. It also says:

Philemon Terrell Jr. had relocated to Pointe Coupee Parish, La. Margaret Ratcliff Terrell never returned to Pointe Coupee Parish. She remained in Arkansas during the time that her daughter Mary Ann Terrell Lefevre was having children. Margaret Ratcliff Terrell became ill and passed away in Arkansas. Old records indicate that Mary Ann Terrell's brother, Samuel Lafayette Terrell, purchased medicine and paid the taxes on the slave "Jack". Records and old family letters make no mention of Margaret Ratcliff Terrell after 1851.

The following is on: http://www.gate.net/~sigmar/ratcliff/ratcliff_family.html

Our Mary Ann Terrell wrote in her diary, on the death of her grandfather: "John Ratcliff Revol. War Soldier"; " The fear and Gospel of the Lord, Deep in his heart abide, Led by the Spirit and the Word, His feet shall never slide".

It was in Arkansas that a young French man met and married Mary Ann Terrell, daughter of Philemon Terrell Jr. and his wife Margaret Ratcliff. On 11 November 1845 Peter Lefevre, son of Francis & Mary Lefevre, married Mary Ann Terrell in Pulaski County, Arkansas. They had three children: Mary Margaret Lefevre Innis, Francis Leon Lefevre, and Peter Lefevre Jr.

It wasn't long (after her Mother's death) before Mary Ann Terrell's husband, Peter Lefevre, also became ill and passed away in 1853. Mary Ann Terrell Lefevre had lost both her mother and husband. Her brother Samuel Terrell was moving to Texas. Samuel Lafayette Terrell took the Terrell ancestral "SILVER BUCKLES" and the slave "Jack" with him to Texas. Mary Ann Terrell moved to Pointe Coupee Parish, Louisiana where her father Philemon Terrell Jr. had previously settled.

It was here in Pointe Coupee Parish that Mary Ann Terrell Lefevre, a widow, met and married a neighbor James Creath Wilcox. They were married 10 October 1855 and lived on the "Old Wilcox Home Place", the same property currently owned by the Smith family.

The endearing story of our Mary Ann Terrell and James Creath Wilcox is published in "The History of Pointe Coupee Parish", as written by the late Roberta Rice Smith.
