John, I am on the Germanna List with a Rector ancestor. I saw your
mention of being from Francis Leake. My husband also has a Leake line. Do you have a lot of data? He is from Anthony M. Leake who came to Texas in 1843. The M is thought to be Minter and he would then be a grandson of
Anthony Minter who had a dau. who mar. a Leake. But the material I have has some problems about this connection so I wondered if you knew about this
line.
What I have says he was the son of Walter, son of Josiah, son of
Walter mar. Judith Mask and so on back. Do you have anything on this Josiah and his son Walter? Thanks for your help.

Wanda Lowery :

Hello John:
I believe I have found reference of your James Terrell in court records about my Willett family. I'm enclosing this at the bottom of this message. Thought you might find it interesting.
I wondered if you have any knowledge of family connection between Mary Tatom Willett and the Terrell family. I know Mary "Polly"'s father but not her mother's name. I suspect she was somehow connected to the Terrell family.

Her father was a wealthy man in Hillsborough, Orange Co.,NC but his will left her very little. The slave woman was the only property he gave to Polly-and it was prior to his death. The mentioned land was for her children. As far as I have been able to determine, Polly was an only child (no mention of a wife - so probably a widower. Wonder if it was "sour grapes" that she gave up her lifestyle and married a "hatmaker" not of her social standing.)

Her father was a delegate the Continental Congress and served later in the NC legislature--He was attending a session of the legislature in Raleigh when he died. He left the remainder of his very large estate(5,000 acres, a plantation in Hillsborough, town home in Raleigh,NC. and considerable money for that time to his siblings and their descendants.)

Polly and Wm. Willett were in Chatam Co.,NC for 1800 census and then came on to Williamson Co.,TN.

Polly Willett was age 74,a widow in 1850 Census of Marion Co., Al. in the home of her son Absalom Tatom Willett/ Lucinda Franks. Judge John Dabney Terrell, Sr. had come to Marion Co. in 1818 as Territorial Judge. A.T. Willett/Lucinda Franks came to Marion Co. in 1831 and their children were born at Pikeville, Marion Co., AL. They were close neighbors to the Terrells. One daughter married Judge Terrell's grandson Wm.H. Neal and one of their grandchildren(by another of their daughters) married one of Judge Terrell's nephews--(This is my line.)

Pikeville was a small town and everyone who came early on seems to be connected to the Terrell family I wonder if Mary "Polly" Tatom Willett's mother might have been a Terrell -- but have found nothing on her. Notice that one of the Willet sons is name for James Terrell.

From MISCELLANEOUS RECORDS OF WILLIAMSON COUNTY, TENNESSEE Volume 9 by Louise Gillespie Lynch
I have a copy of a court deposition of Mary "Polly" Willett aged 60 years. It reads:

"The names and ages of my children are:
Hannah Willett b. 1799 m. Reuben Littleton 28 Dec. 1815
Lewis A. Willett b. 1803
Absalom T. Willett b.1806 [This is my line]
Joseph W. Willett b. 1806
Sarah C. Willett b. 1809 m. Steward Warren in 1831
James Terrell Willett b. 1811
William C. Willett b. 20 June 1813
John C. Willett b. 1815

I was married to William Willett 24 Oct. 1799. My father gave me and my children 580 acres of land on the West Harpeth River by will. He was Absalom Tatum who died Nov. 1802. My husband and I have lived on the land from 1802 to 1829. James Terrell, now deceased, took a lease on the land about 1809 or 1810 for 13 years at $100 per year. After Mr. Terrell leased the land I gave him 7 of the notes for Jane in 1810. Jane had no children at that time. This was for the benefit of my children. The bill of sale was to be drawn for Jane for the use and benefit of my chldren. In 1818, William Willett's creditors were trying to take the negroes away from him and I gave the bill of sale to Terrill."

Also-- There is another statement by a former employee of James Terrell saying that James Terrell went to Nashville on 3 different occassions to retrieve the negroes when Wm. Willett had credit problems. He quoted Terrell as stating that he intended Mary Tatom Willett to have what was rightfully hers.

.....Any ideas on any connection?? Wanda
