John TERRILL [Parents] was born on 7 Aug 1820 in KY. He died in 1900. John married Susan WALLIS on 5 Mar 1840 in , Randolph Co., Missouri.

Lived in Randolph and Chariton Co., MO, and then in Grapevine, TX Found on the 1850 Randolph Co. MO census with Susan and three children and Robert, age 26, assumed to be his brother. I received this email in 3/99. What is in [brackets] is mine:

===========================
John, I finally took the time to go dig for my Terrill information. Myggrandfather was James Parker Terrill(b 3/24/1851 d 12/16/1924 Marietta,
OK), son of John Terrill (1820-1900) married to Susan Wallis on 3/21/1840. In 1850 census, John and Susan were living in Cariton Township, Missouri. [Chariton Co., MO?] John
was the 11th child of Robert and Mary Polly Lacy.

From the same person 4/99:

=======================
John, I finally have a minute to send you a portion of the Terrill information I have. John and Susan Wallis Terrill had 12 children, my ggrandfather, James Parker, was the 8th. I do not have the names of all 12, but do have the name of 8. Perhaps the others did not survive to adulthood. All of these were born in Randolph County, Missouri.

Nancy Harper b 1843
William Robert b 1845 d 1890 married 1869 to Emily Jane Crowley b 1850 d 1937 Mariah Lou Borah b 11/16/1848
James Parker b 3/24/1851 d 12/16/1924 (Marietta, Oklahoma)
Liza Terrill

Malinda (Sis) Harlin
Julia V. Wiley b 6/7/1865
========================

Then in 3/00, I received this from Sharon :

=========================
First of all, I am descended from the daughter of John Terrill and Susan Wallis (Wallace), Nancy HARPER Terrill. I capitalized Harper, as I wish to question why Harper is shown as part of her given name. Her son, Jacob Harper, is my GGrandfather. I show Jacob with John and Susan on the 1880 Tarrant County, Texas census. Are you familiar with this census? I have
been looking for Jacob's father and am hoping you might have some info.

I first found John Terrill by ordering the 1880 Soundex for Harper, when looking for my GGrandfather, Jacob Harper. I was tickled to find him with his Grandfather, John Terrill and then ordered the above mentioned census. I was a little disappointed to not find Jacob's mother and father...oh well...genealogy is not an easy science!! The handwriting is not the best I have seen (and not the worst) so here is how I have deciphered the names. I will put a question mark next to the ones that I am not sure of.

TERRILL, John M 58 "Farmer" Born: Kentucky Father VA. Mother VA
Susan S. F 57 wife "Keeping House" NC VA NC
Julia L. F 15 dau. "At home " MO KY NC
Benjamin A. M 22 son "On farm" MO KY NC
in the same household:
HARPER, Eliza F 13 "Granddaughter" KS MO MO
Matha(Martha?) Ann F 11 "Granddaughter" KS MO MO
Jacob M 7 "Grandson" KS MO MO
HOLLIES? Arthur M 4 "Grandson" TX MO MO
Hollier? (not very legible)

Also, enumerated above this family is another Terrill, I am assuming this is John's son:
TERRILL, William R. M 34 "Farmer" MO KY NC
Emily Jane F 30 wife "Keeping House" TX AL NC
?ela** F 9 dau. TX MO TX
Ola F 5 dau. TX MO TX
Asa M 4 son TX MO TX
Lou F 2/12 dau. TX MO TX
HARPER, John W. M 17 Laborer "Farm Labor" KS unk. MO
also 2 names listed that are then crossed out
Terrill, Lee? M 7 son (dead)
Terrill, Robert M 1? son crossed out no explanation
**Can't make out first letter

I am assuming that John Harper is brother to the other Harpers listed...must have been old enough to live with Uncle William and help on farm. I am so puzzled as to where Nancy and her husband went to...did she die and he then abandon the kids...did he also die...did they strike off alone? I have a copy of Jacob Harper's death certificate...father listed as "unknown"....must not have been talked about with the children by his grandfather, John Terrill...makes me think that this unknown Harper did something "naughty"!
=============================

Susan WALLIS was born in 1823 in , , North Carolina. She married John TERRILL on 5 Mar 1840 in , Randolph Co., Missouri.

Age and place of birth from 1850 census. Her name may be Wallace.

They had the following children:

  F i Nancy TERRILL
  M ii William Robert TERRILL
F iii Mariah Lou TERRILL was born on 16 Nov 1848 in , Randolph Co., Missouri.
  M iv James Parker TERRILL
F v Liza TERRILL was born about 1853.
M vi Benjamin TERRILL was born on 27 Aug 1855.
F vii Malinda Harlin TERRILL was born about 1860.
F viii Julia V. Wiley TERRILL was born on 7 Jun 1865.

Robert A. TERRILL Dr. [Parents] was born on 1 Jul 1823 in , , Kentucky. He died on 30 Nov 1902. Robert married Anna S. HALL on 1 Jan 1851 in , Randolph Co., Missouri.

There is a large biography on this man in the "History of Randolph County, MO", pages 639-641. He is a physician of note at the time of the article, which says that he has been visiting the sick in the north-western part of the county for 35 years. In the early part of his practice, he covered an area now served by 18 physicians. He delivered over 2000 babies and lost only one, and trained some 15 or 20 physicians as interns. It says that he "comes of one of the large and influential families of this section of the state. Of the Terrills there are perhaps not less than 50 worthy citizens of Randolph and neighboring counties, all relatives of the doctor, and representing every calling of life, the law, medicine, the pulpit, colleges, public affairs, trade, agriculture, and all the better classes of industries." It says that his "parents were natives of Albemarle Co., VA, and from there immigrated to Boone, and after to Greenup County, Kty." It gives his birthdate and says that "he was left an orphan by the death of his father when he was but four years old" (His mother lived until he was 27 years old.) In 1830, the doctor's uncle, John Terrill, settled in Howard Co. MO, and six years later, the doctor's mother followed him and settled near John Terrill with her large family. John's wife died, and the doctor's mother married him in 1847 (at age 71). They both died two years later in the same week. It says that he was one of a family of 13 children, all of whom reached maturity and married. It then gives information on his wife and names his children and their spouses. This article was written while he was still alive and practicing medicine and is quite complimentary. Robert is found in the family of his brother, John, on 1850 Randolph Co. MO census, age 26, b. Kty.

His family is found in the following:

Anna S. HALL was born on 10 Dec 1830 in , , Virginia. She died on 6 Mar 1903. Anna married Robert A. TERRILL Dr. on 1 Jan 1851 in , Randolph Co., Missouri.

Her father was John H. Hall, who helped organize Mt. Shiloh Baptist Church. She was the sister of Judge William A. Hall of Huntsville.

They had the following children:

  M i Robert A. TERRILL
  F ii Mary TERRILL
M iii Willard P. TERRILL Dr.
M iv William TERRILL was born in 1859.

Found on 1850 census as twin to Willard. Don't know what happened to him.
F v Bessie TERRILL was born in 1863.
  F vi Florence TERRILL

Marcus S. POWERS was born about 1820. He married Mary TERRILL on 18 Jul 1844 in , Howard Co., Missouri.

Mary TERRILL [Parents] was born on 1 Jul 1823 in , , Kentucky. She married Marcus S. POWERS on 18 Jul 1844 in , Howard Co., Missouri.

Robert's twin. In 1850 a deed was made to William Terrill from M.M. and Mary Powers, but there is no other record of them. I got this email 8/98 from

Dear Cousin John, Sorry it has taken me so long to reply. My way to this family is through my paternal grandmother, Cycy Ben Powers who was born in Paris, MO. She was a dau of Cyrus Powers and Percilla Burgess. Cyrus was
the son of Marcus Powers and Mary Terrill and that is where I tie into the Terrills and Lacys, etc. I've been out of genealogy for quite a while and
have just gotten started again since I got the computer and the internet. I
am at this point a little rusty but trying to get organized again. I have
info from research that I did back in the 1980's so you are probably more current than I am. For example, my records show that Sarah Johnson, wife of Stephen Lacy was Sarah Fleming Johnson. Right? Wrong? I don't know. If
you have Lacy info back further than Thomas Lacy and Phebe Rice, I don't
have it. On the Christain side, I have Judith Jones instead of Mary Leake
and don't know anything about Elizabeth Hunt and Judith Mask. You obviously know more than I. I would appreciate any help that you can give me in correcting my records. My mailing address at home is 218 Capeway, Geneva,
IL 60134 and my fax at work is 630-232-8982 in case you can send me
anything. You ended your great message with sending me gedcom files. I
don't even know what that means, I'm such a novice Thanks for your help and hope to hear from you again. Kathie Walsh

Joshua L. MCKINSEY was born about 1825 in , Campbell Co., KY. He married Mary BEALE in 1851 in , Randolph Co., Missouri.

Possibly related to Nancy McKinsey (#999), b. 1813 in Kentucky.
"Youngest child of William & Nancy (Lampton) McKinsey of Campbell Co., KY.

Mary BEALE [Parents] was born about 1830. She married Joshua L. MCKINSEY in 1851 in , Randolph Co., Missouri.

They had the following children:

  M i James Arthur MCKINSEY

John Robert TERRILL Rev. [Parents] was born on 28 Jul 1827 in , , Kentucky. He died about 1907 in Randolph Co., Missouri. John married Jo Ann "Joan" DESKIN.

A Baptist minister. Found in the 1860 Randolph Co., MO census at:

https://sites.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/mo/randolph/census/1860/0829.gif

Here is an explanation given by Bob Deskin as to whom the people are with John, wife, and child in this 1860 census:

"In 1860 Census I do not know who Benjamin Terrill is, I assumed a younger brother because of age. Gabriel is the child of Mark Deskin and Harriet Mason, married 25 Jun 1848. They had three children, Gabriel 1849, Daniel D. 1851, and Warren 1854. Mark died in 1854 and Harriet Mason Deskin remarried. I assumed that the oldest was farmed out although I haven't
pursued Harriet. Sarah Jo is a little harder although I suspect she is the daughter of Moses H. Deskin and Ann Beale. In the 1860 Census JR and Joanna Terril are family 162 while MH and Anne Duskin are family 171. Family 171 shows a daughter Sarah, 10, but I suspect she is the same Sarah Jo in family 162."

The booklet, "Original Land Purchases of Randolph County, Missouri" by Cecille Taylor Rice, pub. by the Randolph County Historical Society has this on him:

Terrill, John R. on 17 Feb 1854 bought 40 acres (p. 48)
Terrill, John R. Jr. on 22 Aug 1853 bought 80 acres (p. 49)

It is odd that the earlier date had a later page number and I question the accuracy of the page numbers. One is this John Robert and the other one is probably # 2699, my g-grandfather. They used "Jr." in those days to distinguish one from another with the same name, even though not father and son.

One source, Tony Sinclair said:

"JOHN ROBERT TERRILL, b. 1827, Randolph, MO; d. July 19, 1907, Clay, TX."

Ancestry.com has an apparent error. It shows "Deskin, Joan married Terrill, James C. on 15 Oct 1850 in Randolph County, Missour." With all of the other evidence on his name, I don't see how this can be correct.

Jo Ann "Joan" DESKIN was born on 16 Apr 1826 in Bath Co., Kentucky. She died on 21 Nov 1893 in Missouri and was buried in Deskin Cem., Randolph Co., MO. Jo married John Robert TERRILL Rev..

They had the following children:

M i Benjamin TERRILL was born about 1852.
  M ii Allen Deskin TERRILL

Thomas J. TERRILL [Parents] was born on 26 Sep 1855 in Randolph Co., Missouri. He died on 4 Oct 1935. Thomas married Willie GRIMES.

My original source had this man 23 years older and listed under first wife, but he is listed in the family as age 13 on the 1870 census.

Compare this man with #2936.

The book, "Old Families of Randolph County, Missouri", on p. 315 talks of a "T.J. Terrill" who was a teacher for awhile, later chairman of the schoolboard. Unknown if it would be this man.

Willie GRIMES was born about 1850. She married Thomas J. TERRILL.

James M. TOMLINSON was born about 1825. He married Rebecca TERRILL on 15 Jun 1845 in Randolph Co., MO.

Rebecca TERRILL [Parents] was born in 1825. She married James M. TOMLINSON on 15 Jun 1845 in Randolph Co., MO.

My source says that she is shown living with family on 1850 Randolph Co. census with the married name of Tomlinson. She had 3 children: Fannie, May & John.

James William TERRILL Dr. [Parents] was born about 1837 in , Randolph Co., Missouri. He died in 1918 in Winchester, TN. James married 1 Ariminta S. "Minta" BRADLEY on 23 May 1861 in Callaway, MO.

Other marriages:
BRADLEY, Elizabeth Martha
HAMILTON, Nancy Coleman
ESTILL, Lily Mott

Was a minister and lawyer (LLD); president of Mt. Pleasant Baptist College. Moved to Winchester, Tenn. Had two children by first marriage, three by second, seven by third wife. Each of the first three wives had a child who died in infancy, but 12 survived. The College burned to the ground on 15 Jul 1882. He apparently fled to Texas during the Civil War, for the safety of his family, as his dtr. Maude was born there. He then returned to MO after the war.

He is found on p. 68 of the Salt Spring Township, Randolph Co. MO census for 1870, age 35, occupation Pres. of Mt. P. College, b. Kty. With him are his wife, Bettie, age 25; Maud, age 8; Menta, age 2 male; and Babe, age 5 months male (b. Mar 1870). The latter's sex must be in error on the census, as this would have to be Alma, b. 17 Feb 1870. Also in the household are B. Anderson, age 11 female; Mary Bradley, age 22 female; and John McClure (McClane?) age 10 male.

In August of 1995, I received a letter from a descendant, Jean Terrill Thurman Baker of 361 Iliaina Street, Kailua, Hawaii 96734. She enclosed a photograph of this family and the 11 children who had been born at the time of the photo. I have corrected the information I have on this family to agree with hers as she is more knowledgeable on the line.

The 1882 book mentioned under his father says about James "He is now, we believe, at Winchester, Tenn."

This was found in the Moberly Daily Enterprise newspaper:

"Terrill, James -- President of Mt. Pleasant College, has sold his property in Huntsville & will remove to Winchester, TN; Rev. S. A. Beauchamp succeeds him; MDM Wednesday 23 Feb 1876."

"Terrill, J. W. -- & family, left Huntsville for their future home at Winchester, TN, on Saturday last; MDM Wednesday 21 Jun 1876."

See note under his father about him.

Ariminta S. "Minta" BRADLEY was born about 1837 in , Callaway Co., Missouri. She died in 1865 in Mexico, Randolph Co., Missouri. Ariminta married 1 James William TERRILL Dr. on 23 May 1861 in Callaway, MO.

I had their marriage year as 1860 earlier. She is sister to the Bradley who married James also.

They had the following children:

  F i Minte Maude TERRILL

James William TERRILL Dr. [Parents] was born about 1837 in , Randolph Co., Missouri. He died in 1918 in Winchester, TN. James married 1 Elizabeth Martha BRADLEY on 30 Apr 1867 in Callaway, MO.

They had the following children:

M i Menter Bradley TERRILL was born on 11 Feb 1868.

Nickname "Brother".

UNIVERSITY OF NORTH TEXAS. The University of North Texas is a multipurpose university on 415 acres in Denton, a northern suburb of the Dallas-Fort Worth metropolitan area. The school was founded by Joshua C. Chilton as a private college in 1890, when Denton was a rural, agricultural hamlet of 2,500.
The first classes were held on September 16, 1890,

Menter B. Terrill leased NTNC from the city and became the
institution's third president. Under Terrill, North Texas enjoyed its greatest financial success while a private college. He enrolled a large number of precollege-age pupils from the surrounding area in a preparatory course of study, but also awarded 268 teaching certificates and twenty-four bachelor's degrees during his presidency. Despite Terrill's accomplishments, Denton leaders were interested in a state owned and operated college for their city. In 1899 Charles V. Terrell, state senator from Decatur, introduced the bill
in the Texas legislature for a state charter.

On August 29, 1961, the college became North Texas State University, a formal recognition of the changes that had taken place during the preceding fifteen years. Enrollment in the fall semester that year was 8,844, and it continued to climb during the next two decades.
F ii Alma TERRILL was born on 17 Feb 1870. She died after 1925.

Nickname "Sookie" I am told. But, her older (half) sister Maude calls her "Alma" in the letter she wrote in 1926.
