Here is a letter written to Henry E. Cole, Mill Village, Hanover, NH, dated June 20th, 1869. It is from this man to his brother, Henry:

Dear Brother

"We arrived here all safe and well as you have allreaddy heard I expect. We are staying with Flora and I am working for Sheldon in the sawmill. they have got about two million fte [feet] of logs to cut this summer and cut about 25,000 per day. so you see there is something to do in keeping the thing running. I like here verry well as yet. I don't think I would go back East any way. that is as poor as I am now to live for. I think the chances for a poor man are far better West than East. to be shure a man has got to have something here to start with but not anything to what he has East. I went to work as soon as we got here & have been to work all the time since.

It is verry hard time here now but they are hoping for better soon. Money is very hard. I hav not seen any since I got here. but it dont put me out at all for I never saw much you know. Flora has grown old some since she was on East & fat too but is in good health I think. Shel works night and day allmost as you might say. they dont hav power enough to run all of their machinery at the same time so they run some of it in the night. I hav worked nights some.

thare is not much doing here. thare is two saw mills standing stil this summer here. Mary is well and likes here well as yet. Laurie is well and goes to school with Mary & Lizzie. Mary is a good girl but Lizzie is not as good as I wish she was. Nettie is the bigest little torment I ever saw in my life. Baby is one of the boys. just as good as they make.

I dont think of much to write this time but I will try to write often enough to make up for that.

With much love from all to all I remain your aff. [affectionate] Brother
