Bethuel CHITTENDEN [Parents] was born on 24 Oct 1739 in Hartford, , Conn.. He died on 5 Nov 1809. Bethuel married Deborah STRONG.

His father had an earlier child named Bethuel who was born 1736, died 1737. Talcott also has a dob of 4 Nov 1739 for this one, in his later book on Guilford, p. 175. He says that Bethuel "lived in Salisbury, Conn. and Shelburne, Vermont." In his "Appendix B" of his earlier book on Chittendens, he has a letter of Dr. C.S. Chittenden, of Hamilton, Ont. It says:

"Rev. Bethuel Chittenden, 73, removed to Vermont about the same time as his brother, Gov. Thomas. He settled first in Tinmouth, Vt., and built mills there. He was living in that town at the time of the battle of Bennington, and was on the battlefield with my father, Bela Chittenden, then a boy of nine years, on the next day after the fight. At the time of Burgoyne's campaign, in 1777, he was sent to confer with the aforesaid General, and try to prevent his sending the Indians to ravage the townships, which he had threatened to do. Burgoyne compelled each of the committeemen to swear not to take up arms against the Crown, and to supply his forces with provisions and forage if his army should come near them. The other five members of the committee paid no attention to their oaths but took up arms at once in defence of the State. My grandfather refused to break his oath, although it had been obtained by Burgoyne under the menace that he would hold them all prisoners, and send the Indians to destroy their homes and carry off their families. He would not forswear himself, but in order to render the oath ineffective, he left all and retired within the American lines, so that Burgoyne's army could not come near him. I remember distinctly the above, as one of the tales of his boyhood, related to me by my father when I was a boy.

He removed from Tinmouth to Shelburne, Vt., and subsequently prepared himself for the ministry and was ordained a Deacon, June 1, 1787, being then 46 years of age, and ordained Priest, June 29, 1794.

On the morning of his death, while riding to the place of worship where he was to officiate, he remarked to his son Bela, "your mother is very feeble, while I seem to be hale and hearty, but I have often lately felt as I should be taken away before her." On arriving at the house, he sat down to warm himself for a few minutes before commencing the service, when his head fell forward, and without a moment's warning he ceased to breathe. The following is the epitaph on his tombstone:

A Watchman long on Zion's wall,
His life reproved the sins of all;
And while he met his flock to pray,
God took his useful life away."
