Henry Bristow was born in England about 1625 and came to New Haven, Connecticut, some say as a stow-away, about 1642 at the age of 17. New Haven then was a very young colony having been founded only four years earlier. He was apprenticed to learn the coopers trade from a William Davis and may have been indentured before his arrival in New Haven. He was 21 in 1646 and took the Oath of Fidelity or Freeman's Oath 7 March 1647.

Several New Haven records mention his name in the transferral of land by sometime we are longer remembered for our mistakes than our deeds. "2 Oct 1649 Henry Bristow was because the scabbard on his sword was broke, so that the point came out wch is dangerous, was fined 12d." "Dec 1653 concerning sleeping on the watch...upon examination none could clear themselves whereupon the court ordered that J. Chidsey, the Master to pay 5 shillings- for John Brenham and Sam Farnes, witnessed to clear the Master, and for Hen Bristow ye Master conceived he might and did give him leaf to sleep so nothing was done in ye matter matter." On 19 May 1656 he was chosen a "packer of flesh", and later was cleared of a charge of "false meat packing". In 1663 he was appointed a fenceviewer, and in 1666 "to gage cafks for this year". There is no record he ran afoul of the law in these latter positions.

(Goes on to list children and their spouses)...

In summary, Henry Bristow came to New Haven in 1642, had 2 wives and 14 children over a 34 year period...

Henry Bristow's original home-site was on the north-west corner of Elm and Temple streets in New Haven. Descendants of Henry lived there for 7 generations. It is now the site of the New Haven Public Library.

Legend tells us that Henry is buried in the Grove Street Cemetery where the initials H B may still be faintly seen on a stone there.
