William CHITTENDEN Major [Parents] was born in Mar 1593/1594 in Cranbrook, Kent, , England and was christened in Mar 1594 in Parish of Marden, Kent, , England. He died in Feb 1660/1661 in Guilford, New Haven, Conn.. William married Joanna SHEAFFE in England.

Arrived in America 10 Jul 1639. William was one of the company led by Rev. Henry Whitfield (a relative, as he was married to the sister of Rev. Whitfield's wife, Dorothy). They were married in England. William was the principal military man of the Plantation, having been a soldier in the English Army and having fought in the Netherlands in the Thirty Years War, where he attained the rank of Major. He was one of the six men selected to secure the land from the Indians and one of the four Magistrates chosen to have "full power and authority to act, order, and despatch all matters respecting the publick weale and civile government of the Plantation, until a church is gathered among them".

On the gathering of the church, June 29, 1643, these Magistrates resigned their trust and William was elected principal military man of the colony, also Magistrate of the Plantation, and Deputy of the General Council until his death in 1660. It is said that he was one of the leaders of the emigrants from Parish of Cranbrook in Kent. There is listed a Joanna Chittenden as a child of William but with no birth date.?? I am descended from this William six times: William, Thomas, William, etc.; William, Thomas, Josiah, etc.; William, John, etc.

Talcott says: [In the New Haven Colonial Records, p. 417, we find this entry:
"An Inventory of the estate of William Chittenden of Guilford, deceased, was presented, amounting to 677 16s. 7 d. as presented and proved in court at Guilford, the 21st of February, 1660-1, upon oath of Joane Chittenden, the widow and relict of the sayd William Chittenden, deceased, for the quantity, and by the testimony of Abraham Cruttenden Senior, John Fowler, and William Stone, appraisers, for the valuation to be just. Robert CHITTENDEN was born about 1555 in Cranbrook, Kent, England. He married Mary MERRIAM.

Other marriages:
HATCHE, Ellynor

It is said that the name "Chittenden" is a corruption of an ancient Welsh and Cornish name, originally written "Chytanedin," derived from the words "chy", meaning "house," "tane," meaning "lower," and "din" or "dun," meaning "hill." Its literal meaning is the "lower house on the hill." The namesake were chiefly seated in Wales and in the Counties of Cornwall and Kent, England. Most families were of the yeomanry and merchant classes of the British Isles.
The following was posted to the Chittenden group 3/99:

Don't know how accurate the Robert Chittenden/Eleanor Hatche data is from the WFT cd, but I have the following taken from the Hawkhurst, Kent parish registers:

(1) William Chittenden married Elinore Hatch on Feb. 21, 1587 (have baptisms of 8 children), and (2) Robert Chittenden married Elizabeth Hatch on Nov. 15, 1593 (have baptisms of 3 children in Hawkhurst before Elizabeth dies Oct. 9, 1604.

This post was made to the Chittenden group:

[Ellynor Chittenden and children were named in her brother's (John Hatch of Tenterden, co. Kent) will. Her children were named as follows: "viz: eldest son Thomas Chittenden; second son John Chitttenden; youngest son William Chittenden; her son Nathaniel Chittenden,s son Nathaniel (under twenty-one)Among those who "married my kinswomen" was one Robert Chittenden. Joanna Sheaf(f)e, wife of William, has been documented with related families back to the 1400's in one of my books about my New Eng. ancestry.

I corresponded with her and she sent this:

[I don't think any "early" genealogist used John Hatche's will to satisfy their curiosity; however, it could have been, but someone sent me a copy of the will which was written on 13 April, 1535. I agree that the Hatch/Chittenden marriage could have been Major William's grandfather because John Hatch died the following year and that gives almost two generations between Major William and that marriage > 60 years from time of the will to Major William's birth. I had to laugh when the person more or less pooh-poohd the idea but yet more or less emphatically gave Mary Merriam and Robert Chittenden as Major's parents. I know the baptism record shows Robert as the father of William so there is no doubt about that, but I do wish we could find a documentation for the Merriam gal being his mother.

The Hawkhurst, co. Kent marriage of Robert Chittenden and Elizabeth Hatch marriage listed in the parish records on Nov. 15, 1593 would make a good match for William's parents for two reasons: First, there is no Ellinor in any of his children's names but there is an Elizabeth for at least three generations. On the other hand Queen Elizabeth was the one honored with the naming of so many Elizabeths. Secondly, since there was a Robert Chittenden/ELLINOR Hatch marriage, it seems very likely that another combination of families could take place since it seems that people did marry into the same families very often back then. I read some place that the usual distance between the bride and groom was never more than seventeen miles. According to all of my research in co. Kent there was only one Chittenden family and after William came to New England that family disappeared from that shire.

John Leslie wrote me that Marden is in co. Essex, but if I am not mistaken there is a Marden in co. Kent, also and it was co. Kent where William and his family came from. I hope this makes sense. Billie]

The following is from the "Genealogies of Connecticut Families", Vol. 1., p. 502: "Abraham Cruttenden was one of the first settlers of Guilford and was one of the 25 signers of the Plantation Covenant in 1639. It is said that he came from the county of Kent in England and had been a neighbor of William Chittenden, whose widow he afterwards married (late in life). He was probably married in England about 1630, and was probably about 28 or 29 years old at the time of the settlement of Guilford. He died in January, 1683, aged about 73 years. None of his children's births are recorded in Guilford, though some must have been born after he came to that place. On April 30, 1646, he was appointed 'overseer of the mill bay dams or floodgates.' On June 6, 1651, he was chosen assessor and on June 9, 1653, townsman. In addition to his home lot he owned 'a parcel of upland 20 acres abutting to the common woods,' and a 'parcel of marsh land to the South 10 1/2 acres' and a 'parcel of upland over against the mill' containing 19 acres. The name is also spelled Crittenden.

He married first, Mary_____, who died 1664; second, widow Joanna Chittenden, May 31, 1665. She died August 16, 1668. His children were all by his first wife" Talcott gives his dod as Jan 1683.
