Edwin Daniel FOWLER [Parents] [scrapbook] was born on 1 Mar 1811 in Fair Haven, , Connecticut. He died on 8 Jan 1885 in East Haven, New Haven Co., CT. Edwin married Harriet Maria SPRAGUE.

I have the photo of this man, and also his wife. Talcott calls him a Deacon.

I have the Last Will and Testament of Edwin D. Fowler, handwritten, ink very faded on note tablet paper, dated 1881. It is apparent that he had no living children when he wrote the will:

I, Edwin D. Fowler, of the town of the East Haven, in the county of New Haven, and state of Connecticut, being of sound mind and memory, do make and publish this my last will and testament, in manner and form as follows, to wit:

4th, to my said executor, the further sum of one hundred and fifty dollars in trust, to pay the same without interest, after the death of my said wife, and within sixty days thereafter, to the person, who when the same is payable, shall act as treasurer of the American Home Missionary Society, formed in the City of New York in the year of Eighteen Hundred and Twenty Six, to be applied to the charitable uses and purposes of the Society and under its directions.

Fifth and last, I hereby make, contribute, and appoint my said nephew, Edward Walter Leete of Guilford (unreadable) executor, and my said wife, Harriet M. Fowler executrix of this my last will and testament, and order and direct that no bond be required of my said executor, nor of my said executrix during the settlement of my estate and hereby revoke and annul all previous wills by me made in witness whereof I have here unto set my hand and seal, this third day of February, AD 1881.

John SCRANTON was born about 1677. He married Mary NORTON.

Mary NORTON was born about 1680. She married John SCRANTON.

See "History of the Colony of New Haven" by Edward Atwater, which lists two possibilities for ancestors of Mary. John Norton, supposed to be the third
son of Richard Norton and Ellen Rowley of London. His name appears upon the Bradford records as one of the first settlers, where he lived with his wife Dorothy, who died 1652, leaving 3 young dtrs. and a son, John. He married a second wife, Elizabeth, who died leaving a son, John. In 1659, he removed
to Farmington, and was one of the first proprietors in the division of that place. He died there 5 Nov 1709. His son John by his first wife was b. 24 Mar 1651, d. 15 Jan 1657. His son John by second wife was born 14 Oct 1657, died 25 April 1725, married Ruth More. He apparently married a third time to Elizabeth Clark (or this may be same person as second wife?) and they had sons Samuel (b. 13 May 1659, d. 20 Auag. 1659), and Thomas, b. 1660, m. Hannah Rose.

John Scranton is a more likely ancestor, as he came to New Haven in the second ship with his wife, Joanna, who died 1651. He married in 1663 Adeline, widow of Robert Hill. John died 27 Aug 1671, his widow died 1685. His children, Thomas, John, and Sarah, all by first wife, all married and left descendants. "Probably most all persons of this name in Conn. are descendants of this John Scranton." See Scranton Genealogy, 1855, Hartford, Conn.

John SHERMAN Capt. [Parents] was born on 8 Feb 1650 in Stratford, , Conn. He died on 8 Dec 1710 in , , Conn. John married Elizabeth.

Of Woodbury, Conn. He was apparently a Captain in the militia as there is a John Sherman (1650-1730) on the rolls of the Colonial Records of New Haven Colony and of Connecticut Colony, as being from Woodbury. See p. 725 of the "History of the Colony of New Haven" by Edward Atwater. The same source on p. 605 tells of Rev. John Sherman, who was probably his father. Rev. Sherman was born 26 Dec 1613 at Dedham, Essex Co., England, the son of Edmund Sherman, who died in New Haven 1641. Educated at Cambridge, he came to America for religious freedom. He was first an assistant to Rev. George Phillips at Watertown, Mass., and was assigned a house lot at Wethersfield in 1636. From there he migrated to Milford in 1639. After the death of Rev. Phillips in 1646, he returned there as pastor until he died in 1685. "He was a man of superior intellectual endowments; the best mathematician in the country, and left voluminous manuscripts on the Science of Astronomy." He had 26 children, the first 6 by Mary, who died in New Haven, 8 Sep 1646. He then married Mary Launce, whom he met in the family of Governor Eaton. She was the granddaughter of Thomas Darcy, Earl of Rivers, and under the guardianship of Edward Hopkins. She died 1710 after having 20 children. His will was dated 6 Aug. 1685 and names the 13 children who survive him, including a John Sherman who may be this same man. Rev. Sherman died 8 Aug. 1685.
