The times and dates are taken from documents and since they didn’t keep

accurate records because they couldn’t read or write someone transcribed

their statements and could have made mistakes. The memories of people giving

statements do not in a lot of cases match each other. My research will be

close but not completely accurate.

1852 Richard W. Barlow, son to George W. and Elizabeth Wolf, was born, in Atchison Co, Missouri. (Dr. Buckhan indicated in his statement to the Pension Board that Richard was named after him)

 

1854 Mary Elizabeth Barlow, 1st daughter to George W. and Elizabeth Wolf, was born in Atchison co, Missouri.

 

April 1857 Jeremiah Barlow, 3dr son to George W. and Elizabeth Wolf,  was born in Atchison Co, Missouri and the attending Physician at the birth was Doctor  Richard Buckham

Also enumerated in Clay Twp was William Barlow age 43 born in Ky and a farmer  with $250.00 of real estate with $465.00 of personal property with wife Mary J and family

The #5 child probably was not born prior to the 1860 Census. About  the fall of 1860 a child was born but never named except that he was called Buddie  #5

 

1861 Child #5, Buddie died in Atchison Co, Missouri.

 

28 March 1861  Julia Barlow, 2nd daughter to George W. and Elizabeth Wolf,   was born in Atchison Co, Missouri and the attending Physician was Doctor Richard Buckham.

1861 Mary Polly White Barlow, wife of Jeremiah, died in Clay Twp, Atchison Co, Missouri. She was the mother of George W. & William Barlow.

 

13 Mar 1862 George Washington Barlow enlisted in Capt. Richard’s Co., Mo. State Militia at Rockport Mo, Period enlisted for” “during the Civil War”

 

22 Mar to Apr 30, 1862, Company Muster Roll for Co C 9th Batt’n, Mo State Mil Cav, this organization subsequently became Co C 5th Reg’t Mo State Militia Cavalry (1st Organization). George was absent on Det. Serv at Rockport Mo.

 

30 Apr to Aug 31, 1862, Company Muster Roll  for Co C, 5th Reg’t Mo State Militia Cav has George present, the remarks have “Furnished horse. Pay due for private horse from date of enlistment. Good equipment $32.40.”

Sept to Oct, 1862,  Company Muster roll for Co C, 5th Reg’t Mo State Militia Cav has George absent, Valuation of horse, $100.00, remarks has “Pay due for horse and equipment from date of muster. Sick in Hospital at Kansas City, Mo. since Oct 20, 1862.

 

Nov to Dec, 1862,Company Muster roll for Co C, 5th Reg’t Mo State Militia Cav has  George absent remarks has ”absent sick in Atchison Co, Mo. Pay due for horse and equip from Sep 1, 1862”

 

21 Dec 1862 Elizabeth Sherfy marries George Washington Barlow in Atchison County, Missouri. He was widowed and had five children. George W was still home and absent from his military unit.

Elizabeth was the sister to Mary Jane Sherfey,  wife to William Barlow, brother to George.

 

Late in the fall of 1862 when Julia was about 6 months old Washington Barlow left for the War.

Jan to Feb, 1863, The Company Muster roll for Co C, 5th Reg’t Mo State Militia Cav has 

George absent remarks has absent sick at Atchison Co, Mo since Dec 1862.

 

11 Apr 1863 George Washington Barlow dies of a decease contracted while severing in Co C 5th Regt Missouri State Militia. He was home on furlough. “Dr. Buckham a physician residing near was called to see him in his last illness and he at once said that he was beyond the reach of medicine and would die soon and he made no charge and has no entry on his books, consequently it is hard for him to remember any maternal facts”

December 24 1864 Elizabeth Sherfy Barlow marries Louis Waldter in Nemaha County, Nebraska.

 

April 19 1868 Jeremiah Barlow son of Lewis Barlow dies

 

21 May 1868, Malcolm McKillop submitted for letter of administration on the Estate of Jeremiah Barlow, it mentions his living children and the heirs of George Washington Barlow, William, Mary, Jeremiah and Julia all of Atchison County, Mo 

 

 

17 Nov 1869 “Aaron Kid was appointed Guardian of the persons and Estate of Richard Barlow age 16, Jeremiah Barlow age 10, and guardian of the Estate of William Barlow age 19, Mary Barlow  age 14 and Julia A. Barlow age 8,  by the County Court of Atchison Co, Missouri”.

24 Feb 1872, the Court of Atchison Co appointed Jeremiah Barlow, Missouri Guardian of Julia Ann Barlow, 11 yrs old

 

1872, As near as Dr. Buckham can remember William Barlow, son #1, died in the fall of 1872, He did not marry or have children.

 

 

8 Sept 1874, Jeremiah Barlow as Guardian of Julia Ann Barlow signs inventory of real and personal property.

17   Aug 1878, Rockport, Atchison County, Mo, Guardian’s Declaration for Minor Children’s Army Pension, Richard W Barlow appeared in court and was appointed Guardian of

Richard was required to enter into bond as such Guardian in the sum of $3000.00

Richard Barlow stated he was a resident of Nodaway Co, Mo

October 1883, Dr. Richard Buckham, age 72, makes a General Affidavit about George Washington Barlow and family.

 

 

11 April 1884, Elizabeth Waldter makes another statement trying to receive pension from the government. If she wasn’t so greedy we may never have got this far in the story of the children of George W.

 

28 June 1884 Dr. Robert Buckham makes statement stating he was aquatinted with Washington Barlow. He remembers being present at the births of a least 3 children. Richard was born, as near as he can remember is, about 1852-1853. He doesn’t have any record for the exact date. Jeremiah was born Nov 27 1859 and Julia was born march 28 1861. Washington died about 2 yrs after the birth of the last child.

 

Oct 1884, Letter by Mary Jane Sherfy Barlow (wife of William Barlow, sister to Elizabeth Sherfy Barlow who is the wife of George Washington Barlow) stating that she knew Washington Barlow and his family. She new he was in Co. C 5th Regiment, Missouri Militia. He died in the year 1863. She stated she has lived in Rockport, Atchison County, Missouri for 30 years.

 

Aug 1886, Statement from the War Department “The records of this office fail to show furlough as alleged. No additional information”

 

24 Jan 1887, Holt County, Nebraska Richard Barlow ,age 35, stated his birth date was 19 July 1852 and didn’t know of any records kept of his birth. (He signed the document)

 

24 Jan 1887, Holt County, Nebraska, Louisa A. Barlow stated she has been in the same neighborhood as Richard Barlow for 35 years.. (She signed the document) Ewing, Holt Co, Nebraska

 

11 November 1884 Elizabeth makes another statement for recupment of disability pay for George Washington Barlow.
