Biography:

Lieutenant Colonel Bernal was born on 20 July, 1960 in Aurora, Colorado and grew up in Tacoma, Washington. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1978 and attained the rank of sergeant. He was selected for a Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps scholarship and attended the University of Southern California. He received his Masters of Business Administration from Webster University, St. Louis, Missouri.

Upon graduation from USC in 1985, Lieutenant Colonel Bernal attended The Basic School and the Infantry Officers Course. He was assigned to 1st Battalion, 2nd Marine Regiment in Camp Lejeune, North Carolina where he served as a Rifle Platoon Commander and Company Executive Officer for Bravo Company. In 1988 he was an Assault Team Leader during Operation Praying Mantis, the take down of the Iranian Oil Platforms. Also in 1988 he was transferred to Officer Candidates School in Quantico, Virginia where he served as a Platoon Commander and Instructor.

From August of 1991 through May of 1992, he attended the Amphibious Warfare School. Upon the completion of his studies he was assigned as the Assistant Operations Officer for the 24th Marine Expeditionary Unit (Special Operations Capable). During this tour he participated in Operations Restore Hope and Continue Hope in Somalia, Operation Cease Fire in Kuwait, and Operation Provide Promise in the Adriatic Sea.

In 1994, Lieutenant Colonel Bernal was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 6th Marine Regiment where he served as the Headquarters and Service Company and Lima Company Commander. He participated in Operation Sea Signal in Cuba.

In 1995 he was transferred to Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island, South Carolina and served as the Depot Operations Officer, the Executive Officer for Weapons and Field Training Battalion and Director, Drill Instructor School.

In June of 1998, Lieutenant Colonel Bernal was posted as the Commanding Officer of Recruiting Station Los Angeles, California, the 2nd largest of 48 recruiting stations in the nation. During this time he led his station to achieve the longest consecutive monthly-mission-making streak in the nation. Additionally, his station also achieved the nation’s lowest attrition percentage from recruit training.

After his change of command in April 2001, Lieutenant Colonel Bernal was assigned to duty as the Marine Attache in London, United Kingdom.

His personal decorations include: the Meritorious Service Medal with Gold star in lieu of second award, the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal with Combat 'V' and Gold star, and the Combat Action Ribbon.
