After completing Active Duty service in 1987, Derek joined Boeing Aerospace Operations in Huntsville Alabama working at the NASA Marshall Space Flight Center on the Space Shuttle External Tank. He then joined Technical Analysis Inc. as Lead System Safety Engineer working on the NASA Space Station Program.

In 1992 he moved to Loral Space Information Systems at the Johnson Space Center (JSC) in Houston Texas working on Space Station integration.

In 1996 he joined Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC) where he has held a variety of positions and is currently the Safety and Test Operations Department Head for the Safety and Mission Assurance Support Services Contract at NASA Johnson Space Center.

Derek and Lynn have three children, and currently reside in Seabrook (South Houston), TX. They stay in contact with fellow Trojans Pat Moynihan (82) in Dallas and Carlos Noriega (81), an astronaut at JSC in Houston.
