Obituary:

PAUL LEE HUMMEL MARCH 12, 1923-OCTOBER 30, 2002

Paul L. Hummel, born March 12th 1923, in a bungalow at 46th and Broadway. He passed away October 30, 2002 from congestive heart failure.

Paul attended West Vernon Grammar School, with 5 pupils that started Kindergarten together and went all the way thru John Adams Junior High School and Manual Arts High School and were still in touch.

At Manual he participated in B Football, Track and Cross country, became a Knight and a member of the Aeolian Club. Elected Boys Judge in Senior Year.

Worked the summer for 4 years at YMCA Camp. Little Green Valley under Otto Buss. Obtained the "Purple Rag" the next highest award for Y Campers.

At USC, Paul became a member of the Naval ROTC, Blue Key, Varsity Letterman in Track under Dean Cromwell, and in Water Polo. He was commissioned an Ensign and married Norma Gregory his high school sweetheart in February 1944.

Paul served as Commanding Officer of a Tank Landing Craft (LCT) and made the invasion of Southern France August 15, 1944.

He went on to Became the Executive Officer of a Tank Landing Ship (LST) in the Pacific Theater and was at Leyte in the Philippines awaiting the invasion of Japan when the Atomic bomb was dropped. Participated in the Occupation of Japan visiting Kure, Japan, Hong Kong and Shanghai, China.

Paul continued Navy career in the Submarine Force, on both Active and Reserve Duty for a total Navy affiliation of 32 years.

During that time he served tours on the Staff of SubPac and SubLant, attended Prospective Commanding Officers School at Pearl Harbor, was a Member of the National Naval Reserve Policy Board in Washington, D.C. for three years. He attended short courses at the Navy War College, the National War College in Washington, and numerous Submarine Tactical Training Courses.

Paul retired as a Captain, USN in 1974, qualified in Submarines.

After retirement, he served as Administrative Assistant to the Los Angeles County Assessor Phillip E. Watson. He was a Member of the Planning Commission for two years and then as an elected Councilman for five years in the City of Newport Beach.

Paul was ualified as a Private Pilot of single engine aircraft at the Marine Corp Air Station at El Toro in 1985.

He continued to maintain contact with many of his Manual Arts Classmates.

Over the years Paul and Norma made numerous vacation trips to Europe, Australia, N.Z., Asia, and the Hawaiian Islands.

He leaves behind four children, Cheryl, Craig, Glen, and Dore, Son-in-law Mark Rhyme, and 5 grandchildren, Kurt, Sean, Brittany, Lyndsey, and Lauren. His wife Norma, preceded him in death September 5th 2002. He will be interred with full Military honors at Ft. Rosecrans Military cemetery at Point Loma in San Diego with Norma his beloved wife of 58 years. Arrangements are pending.
