It wasn't until 1994 that the Alumni League became aware of Captain
McGonagle and the fact that he was holder of the medal of honor. Many of us
got to know the Captain and he became active in the NROTC alumini activities. He
passed away 3 Mar 1999.
Soon afterward your Alumni Board of Directors was informed that the Captain
was giving a $500.00 Scholarship award to a deserving midshipman each year.
The Board was asked to pick up this funding for the NROTC Unit. This was
unanimous from the Board. We have been making this $500.00 award in his name
ever since.
As the financial officer on the Board, I have had a goal. I wanted to make the
award permanent and also not dilute the name of Captain McGonagle with another donor.
Inflation also takes its toll.
I came up with a plan that will solve both problems. Form our Scholarship endowment,
we just made our firt payout of $5,400.00 for the benefit of the midshipmen. Your
Board of Directors has approved placing the Captain W McGonagle award under
the umbrella of our Scholarship Endowment program. The Alumni will continue to
make their annual payment to this award, but into the regular Scholarship
Endowment until funds reach the amount that this award will be self supporting.
Extra payments can also be made to reach this goal.
Beginning in 2008, the award will increase at the same percentage that the
annual payout does from the Scholarship Endowment. Our goal is $10,000 which
will support this award. Our Scholarship Endowment continues to grow.
Thank you for your dues, extras, and Scholarship donations. Now you can
see how these funds are used directly to the benefit of the midshipmen of
the USC NROTC Battalion.
