OUR?? REED RECORDS
14 May 1740 | Orange County Deed Bk 4, p. 9 | William Reed, b. ca 1695, purchased 200 acres on the southwest side of Opequon Creek. The Transactio was witnessed by David Vance & Huch Gilder. Willaim paid Jost Hite 12# for the land, part of Hite's original patent of 5,018 acres. |
14 Nov 1749 | Northern Neck Grants, H-2 | William was deceased by 14 November 1749 when his widow Mary was appointed administrator of his estate in Frederick County. On 19 June 1751 Mary received a Fairfax grant for 100 acres adjacent south of the 210 acres tract. She paid 4#, 10 schillings for the survey and deed. |
6 May 1755 | Frederick County, VA Will Book 2, p. 158 | Mary was deceased by 6 May 1755 when her will (dated 11 December 1754) was proved in Frederick County Court. She bequeathed 50 acres each from the 100 acre tract grant land to her youngest wons William and Jonathan. Her husband William had willed the 200 acres to their eldest son John and daughter Martha, wife of Samuel Givens (b.ca 1720). Mary appointed her brother, Robert Allen to serve as executor. |
2 Dec 1778 | Northern Neck Warrants & Surveys, Frederick Co, VA, Vol. III, Joyner | John's brother Jonathon assigned the 206 acres to him on 31 March 1773 and he received a Fairfax grant for it on 2 December 1778. *** |
22 Mar 1738/39 |
Orange Co. VA Court Bk 1, p. 439 | William Reed and Robert Allen petitioned the Orange Co. Court for a road from Jost Hites's Mill to Ashby Bent. They were ordered by the Court to clear the road. |
***John Reed, as the eldest son of William and Mary and heir-at-law, claimed both tracts of land by law of inheritance. (A widow can sell inherited land, grant land or purchased land, but cannot bequest land since it is her possession only for so land as she lives.) So John was able to claim the original grant of 200 acres his father left him PLUS the 100 acres Mary had bequeathed to William and Jonathan, her two youngest sons.
