NEW  - From Felicia & Jeanine :  The name of Nathan's first wife was Julianne Harris, d. 1785.  They had 3 sons:  William Veal Sr; Nathan Veal Jr.; and Edward Veal.

Notes for NATHAN VEAL, SR:

The Veale family originated in Ireland from Scot-Irish ancestry and many of them came to the U.S. through England. The Veale family was in Essex County, VA as early as 1693.
Tax records on property in Henry County, VA for 1779 and 1780 show that Nathan Veal was a resident & property owner. The e was dropped from the name; however, records do not state when.
Henry Co, VA records show that Nathan Veal, Sr fought in the Revolutionary War serving in John Cunningham's Company, VA Militia under Col. Abram Penn and his company was ordered on 3-11-1781 to march to North Carolina to join General Stevens' Command and prepare for the Battle of Guilford Court House between Continental forces under General Greene and British forces under General Cornwallis. Sometime between the end of the Revolutionary War.
1785, Nathan moved to Amherst Co, VA. He was listed on the Virginia Tax Payers 1782-1787 Head of Families--Virginia From the book "A History of Deepstep, Georgia": 1785 Amherst County, VA as head of household with five white souls.
Carnaby Veal was also listed with 4 white souls.

Nathan, Sr established the line of Veals in South GA around Sandersville/Deepstep. Nathan Veal was credited as one of the trailblazers in the book. Settled on Buffalo Creek in Washington Co & eventually owned 740 acres of land on Buffalo Creek & 150 acres in Deepstep. After 1790 Nathan moved to Spartanburg, SC for a brief time, then to Hancock Co, GA, where he is listed in 1805 GA Land Lottery Hancock County, GA Hancock Bk. The two families living such a short distance apart could have well known each other. The name "Veale" is of English origin, still familiar in Devonshire and Cornwall. When James was a boy, he moved w/his family to Union Co, SC.

POB: Old Veale Cemetary on land that he deeded to his son James Carr Veale, Jr. Lavina POB: w/her father, Dr John Townsend in Old Odon Cemetary, Odon, IN Morris is not listed in the Will of Wm Veale, Sr but is listed in the Wm Veale, Sr & Thomas Ludwell Lee lease of 1770 as 4th son, and Susanna as 2nd dau. Van Stilley believes that this Morris wasn't named in the will of Wm, Sr due to the fact that the lease was delayed, and Morris had died prior to the date of the Will in 1796. Bob believes that this Morris was the father of Donald's James, already had rec'd his properties & moved to GA, perhaps, w/Carnaby's dau, Mary Ware. Carl W Veale, Sr's newly found records shows that Carnaby, James, etc were in GA around the early 1800's where Nathan, Sr showed up also. Carnaby was b 1725 (Morman Ancestoral Files) which means that Wm, his bro, being born near the same time. Could D V Dove's James b 1779 be brothers? The Morris Vele group includes Carnaby & Wm, brothers. Late Carl W Veale's "The Veale Heritage" and "30 Genealogies of the United Kingdom Veal/Veale's"

Endnotes

1.  Kansas GenWeb Project Archives -  The career of Col. (George W.) Veale has been in keeping with the splendid record of his ancestry. He is descended from one of the 3 brothers who came to America in 1640. Subsequent generations adopted 3 different spellings of the name, Veale, Vail and Viele. Col. Veale's grandfather, James C. Veale, Sr. was a native of SC and served with Sumter in the Revolutionary War. In 1806 he brought his family with wagons and teams over the mountains from the Carolinas to Daviess Co., IN. The creek where he located was named for him, and a township in Daviess Co. still bears his name. He died on his IN homestead in 1841 when about 93 years of age.
