Indiana

57th Indiana Volunteers

Stidham, Joseph S., Co. C: In the Fall of 1861, Joseph Springer [339] Stidham raised a company of 100 men. His comrades elected him Captain and in December they were mustered into the Union Army. He died 23 Jun 1864, at the Battle of Kenesaw Mountain, near Atlanta. His remains were brought back from Georgia and buried in the Earlham Cemetery, near Richmond, Indiana, in December of 1865. The same board his comrades set up to mark his grave in Georgia was placed on the mound of fresh dirt. Today, there is a large monument in his memory. Photograph and newspaper article.

Stidham, Peter C.: Peter Cornelius [318] Stidham was drafted 19 Sep 1864. He became ill during training camp at Camp Carrington, near Indianapolis, and was honorably discharged on 13 Nov 1864, in Columbus, Ind. Peter never saw any action during the war. Photograph. Kentucky

(?) Cavalry Volunteers

Stidham, Samuel, Co. D: Samuel [664] Stidham enlisted on 11 Oct 1861 at Ervine, Estille Co., he fought under Capt. John Buchanan. He was captured by the C.S.A. under Gen. E. Kirby Smith of Richmond, Ky. on 30 Aug 1862. He was soon parolled and rejoined his unit in January of the following year. He lost his left eye during action at Chattanooga. He didn’t hospitals or the soldier’s life and like many young soldiers, he deserted in 1862 rather than desert his young wife and daughter. He was denied an honorable discharge. Photographs.

Kentucky State Troops

Stidham, James, Co. C, Three Forks Battalion: James [667] Stidham enlisted on 1 Aug 1864 and was mustered in on 17 Aug 1864, in Booneville, Ky, and fought under Capt. Nat Williams who said that Jim was one of the best soldiers he ever had during the war. He was mustered out 17 Jul 1865 at Irvine, Ky.

Stidham, Andrew J., Co. E, Three Forks Battalion: Andrew Jackson [653] Stidham enlisted on 1 Nov 1864, at Crocketsville, Breathitt Co., at age 20. He was mustered out on 17 Jul 1865, at Irvine, Ky. Andrew fought in the war along with his brother Samuel Henry [650] Stidham.

Stidham, Samuel H., Co. E, 1st Sergeant, Three Forks Battalion: Samuel Henry [650] Stidham enlisted on 1 Nov 1864, at the same time as his younger brother Andrew Jackson [653] Stidham (see above). Samuel first joined the Confederate Army on 14 Sep 1862, at Jackson, Ky. Tombstone.

14th Regiment Cavalry

Stidham, Thomas, Co. C, 3rd Battalion: Thomas [663] Stidham enlisted 12 Dec 1862 in Owsley Co. His unit later became Co. L, in the same Regiment. He was honorably discharged on 24 May 1864 at Camp Nelson, Ky. Late in life he received a pension (#788489 and #934270) as a result of sickness incurred during the war. Photographs.

Stidham, John W.: John Wesley [725] Stidham enlisted on 10 May 1863, at Louisa, Ky., and served under Capt. Wiley C. Parrick. He was honorably discharged in 1865, at Louisville, Ky,. according to his pension #986862.

Organized at Kalamazoo and Marshall by consolidation of 28th and 29th Michigan Infantry on 26 Oct 1864. Battles: Nashville, Carolinas Campaign, Wise’s Forks, etc. Mustered out 6 Jun 1866.



Missouri

8th Regiment Cavalry

Stidham, George H., Co. I: George Harrison [427i] Stidham enlisted on 4 Sep 1862 in Buffalo, Mo. He served with Capt. Foster McAdoo. George was missing in action after the Battle of Cache River, Ark., but was present at muster. He became disabled in the line of duty near DeValls Bluff, Ark., from February to April 1864. He mustered out at Little Rock, Ark., on 20 Jul 1865, and was discharged on 2 Aug 1865, at St. Louis, Mo. He received a pension. George fought in the war with his two brothers: Calvin Lee [427a] Stidham (see below), and Henry [427d] Stidham. Civil War Record.

Organized 6 Aug to 15 Sep 1862, at Springfield. Battles: Prairie Grove, Ark., etc. Mustered out 20 Jul 1865.

14th Regiment State Militia Cavalry

Stidham, Calvin L., Co. B: Calvin Lee [427a] Stidham enlisted 25 Feb 1862, in the 14th Regiment. He transferred to Co. B of the 4th Regiment on 22 Feb 1863. Calvin furnished his own horse and equipment and was paid $60 per month for this. He was discharged 24 Feb 1865 at St. Louis and mustered out 28 Mar 1865 at Warrensburg, Mo. On 31 Jul 1890, Calvin applied for his pension. Calvin fought in the war along with his two brothers: Henry [427d] Stidham, and George Harrison [427i] Stidham.

Organized at large from March to May 1862. Battles: Prairie Grove, Ark., etc. Disbanded 3 Mar 1863.



Ohio

Organized at Lancaster 20 Apr 1861. No Battles. Mustered out 15 Aug 1861. 17th Regiment Infantry (3 years) Organized at Camp Dennison 30 Aug 1861. Battles: Mill Springs, Perryville, Stone’s River, Chickamauga Campaign, Siege of Chattanooga, Atlanta Campaign, Carolinas Campaign, etc. Mustered out 16 Jul 1865.

79th Regiment Infantry

Steddom, John D.: John Drake [885] Steddom. Born 31 Aug 1838, son of Samuel Teague [431] Steddom and Margery Spray. No other information.

Organized at Camp Dennison Aug 1862. Battles: Atlanta Campaign, Resaca, March to the Sea, Carolinas Campaign, etc. Mustered out 9 Jun 1865.



Pennsylvania

63rd Volunteers

Stidham, John G., 105th Co. K: John G. [381] Stidham enlisted 1 Aug 1861. He was paroled in Feb 1864, then rejoined his regiment. During one battle, he was injured and his knapsack torn from his back by a shell. He was captured 31 May 1865 and was held prisoner at the infamous Andersonville Prison in Georgia, where he was reunited with his brother George [383] Stidham, whom he thought had been killed in battle (see below). John was discharged on 19 May 1866, in Washington, D.C. John’s brother Andrew J. [382] Stidham also fought in the war (see below). Photograph of brothers, John [381], Andrew [382] and George W. 103rd Regiment Infantry

Stidham, Andrew J., Co. C: Andrew J. [382] Stidham served as a drummer from 1 Aug 1861 to 11 Jul 1865. He fought in the war along with his two brothers: John G. [381] Stidham (above), and George Washington [383] Stidham (below). He was discharged in Washington, D.C. Photograph of brothers, John [381], Andrew [382] and George W. [383] Stidham.

Stidham, George W., Co. K: George Washington [383] Stidham served from 28 Oct 1861 to 25 Jun 1865. He fought in 23 battles and ended up a prisoner at the infamous Andersonville Prison in Georgia for nine months. George and his brother John [381] Stidham (see above) tried to escape by tunneling under a prison wall, but were betrayed by a fellow inmate. George’s brother Andrew J.
