Back in 1996, I found out about some then-new internet tools to search for people, like electronic phone books. There are now many companies online that do this, including variations like yellow pages, reverse lookups, etc. I first used Yahoo's search, which later merged with a company called Four11. Yahoo's internet address is at "http://people.yahoo.com/". I then found another searcher called Magellan, which has since become Infospace (at "http://www.infospace.com/"), which also included searching in Canada. It also seemed to do a somewhat better job at finding people (i.e., more names).

The searchers allow you to enter any combination of search information (first/last name, city, and/or state) and "search" an electronic phone book. You can search for people based on any or all of: first name, last name, city, state, etc. Thus, you can search for "Truax" in "MN" (Minnesota) and find out there's 118 (or 122) listings.

The searchers usually give you the names, addresses, and phone numbers of ten listings at a time, and tell you how many there are if there are over 10, up to a limit of 200. [It also works much better than paying to call a long distance information operator to find a particular phone number.] They can also be used to find e-mail addresses on the internet--there's over 50 "Truax" entries alone !! One such contact led me to the Association in 1996 !!!

I decided to try to find out "Where Are The DuTrieux Descendants?" of today. I spent a few hours using each searcher to check each of the 50 states (and Canada) for the names Truax, Truex, Trueax, Dutrieux, etc. The results are shown on the table below, with the numbers for each state's results from Yahoo and Magellan/Infospace compared. The "TOTAL" column adds the maximum of each name (e.g., Truax, Truex, etc.) search when adding. I also decided to compare the TOTAL numbers to the state's population, in order to give a relative "density" figure of how many Truax's, etc. there are. So I divided by the state's total population (in millions), giving a number per million population for comparison). These two columns are in boldface in the chart, as is the US and Canada totals.

I did this exercise for my own interest and enjoyment, and decided to share it with Association members through the newsletter. Recently, I decided to add it to this website. Plus, the story about the internet tools might help other members find distant relatives of today.

Some tidbits of information about the searching:

  1. Yahoo's information does not include unlisted numbers (for protection). Magellan/Infospace often lists more people (not sure why), but there's strong correlation between the systems. Magellan searches in Canada also.
  2. Both systems show/count Phone Listings (white pages), which roughly equates to households. I'd estimate between 2-3 people per household, maybe more (?).
  3. There's some duplication of names (mostly in Yahoo's systems), as some people have both a home and business phone listing.
  4. The information is dated, as this search was done in October 1996. Also, phone listing updates ( normally made quarterly) may take up to a year to be entered (just like changes in your phone book).

Several interesting facts became evident:

  1. We're represented in all 50 states (even Hawaii)!!! The national average of listings is just over 10 listings per million population.
  2. There are only a few Dutrieux, Dutreix, Dutrieu, etc. listings (families). Interestingly, there's 18 Dutreix listings in Louisiana.
  3. There are over 2800 household listings of Truax, Truex, and Trueax. Of these, there's approximately a 3 to 1 ratio of Truax to Truex, with a few Trueax's here and there. (I wonder if we're all descended from Philippe, or if other duTrieux families emigrated to the US ??)
  4. Although New York and California have the most listings (over 210), the highest density of Truax, etc. (number of listings per million population) are in Indiana, Montana, Vermont, and West Virginia (all with over 30 listings per million), and Oregon and Minnesota (over 25 per million).
