William DILLEY, Prisoner in Iowa

Good Morning-
Here is an answer to my feedback letter sent to this page-with another Story--maybe you could combine the two? Really amazing--Look at his age!

Lorrie -

Thanks for visiting my website.

Bill Dilley was well regarded as far as inmates go. He was convicted of murder in Johnson
County, Iowa (Iowa City) and committed to prison for life early in 1877. I don't have details
of his offense. Some day I'll research that. Shouldn't be too hard, if I can come up with a
sentencing date. The Iowa City newspapers on microfilm of that date would probably contain
good info.

He is mentioned elsewhere in my website. Check out:

He was buried in the city cemetery, not in the prison cemetery. I found his headstone, carved
by a fellow inmate. The prison newspaper of the day commented on the fine job the craftsman
was doing for the beloved Old Dilley. The stone is worn by time and the elements but is still
a striking piece after all these years.

Thanks again for writing. Do you think Bill Dilley might be a relative?
