Four grandsons (sons of Joseph Dilley) and two great grandsons of Ephraim lived in Washington Co., Ohio, between 1850 and 1870. Robert P. and Abraham appeared as young men with earIy families during the 1850 census in Aurelius twp on section 18. Balzer, an even younger son of Joseph, was residing in Liberty twp in 1850. Robert P. also appeared in the 1860 census but Abraham and Balzer were missing. However, Abraham sold land for oil drilling along with Robert P. about 1865 in Aurelius twp.
Valentine Joseph Dilley, second son of Joseph, and his two sons James L. and Richard H., apparently moved to Wash. Co. about 1861 from where the two youngsters (22 and 17 yrs old) volunteered for Civil War service. When they arrived home from the war in 1865, their father and two uncles were getting rich selling land for oil exploration. The young men operated a store for 4 years then moved away and back to Guernsey Co., eventually. James L. lost a leg during the war and became a jeweler in Muskingum Co. for 9 years before returning to Senecaville in 1880 where he grew up. He remained there until his retirement in 1908. He was buried at Senecaville. Robert P., Abraham, and James L. Dilley were Aurelius twp officers (trustees and assessors) during the 1860s. Considering the apparent wealth that the older descendants of Ephraim obtained selling land for oil, I think there should be more information in county records.
Valentine Joseph Dilley (1814-1885) returned to Senecaville and is buried there with his wife Amanda Hutchison (1817-1905). V. J. Dilley is hard to follow in records because he used several versions of his given names including reversing them.
There were Virginia-born Dilleys of a different clan in Belpre twp., Wash. Co., Ohio. Lewis Dilley and his wife Olive, Isaac M. and Rachel P. Dilley , and Rhyal Dilley in Fairfield twp were probably descendants of John, Richard and Joseph who emigrated to Wash. Co. Ohio from Virginia about 1810. There appears to be no mixing with Caleb Dille's grandsons, Squire, Absalom, James and Lewis, all sons of Caleb's oldest son David, who were living in Athens Co., Ohio just west of Wash. Co. along the Ohio River in 1840 and 1850. David Dille son of John Sr. lived in Monroe Co., Ohio in 1820 (SW of Belmont Co); he probably moved to Missouri after 1820. Joseph and Barzilia Dille lived in Monroe Co. in 1850. These two names are puzzling and not yet connected to David's line. Also living in Monroe Co in the late 1820s were Caleb and his son Joseph; they moved to Richland Co., OH before -1830. The only Brazilla known was the son of Joseph who appeared in the 1850 census for Washington Co., OH.) JDA

The 1820 census records show 3 of Ephraim's sons in the county
with families along with Ephraim Sr. then 75 yrs old. Joseph and
Sarah Bulkley were already 26 to 45 yrs old and had 9 ch i1dren
living at home--6 boys and 3 g irls. The census shows 6 boys all
bu t 1 under 10 yrs and 3 girls of whom one was 10-16 which
fits Joseph b 1783. This inc1udes all his boys bu t only 3 of
5 gir1s. We have birth dates only for Bulkley in 1813, but obviously
his family was nearly complete by 1820. (Sandra's census records
show that there were 9 boys including Brazilla who was a man,
and Abraham, Robert, and John B. were born after 1820. He had
4 girls according to these later census records.)
Abram Dilley of Richland twp was obviously Abraham b 1785 who
married 19 Apr 1808 at 23 years of age. He had 6 girls (all but
1 under 10) and 1 boy by the 1820 census. This fits the birth
dates (1810 to 1818 for 6 girls and 1 boy). Eliza was not born
until Sept 1820 and was not counted. Note that no deaths occurred
during infancy and childhood, and all 10 children lived to maturity
and 9 of 10 married. This produces a lot of descendants.
Robert Dilley and his wife of Richland twp were 26-45 in the 1820 census record. The record shows 2 females under 10 which fits Lucy b 1818 and Katherine b 1820. But who are the males under 10 and 18-26? These are probably children of relatives or apprentices because he later had both living with him. The 1830 censue shows Ephraim Sr. and 5 of his 6 sons as heads of families. Samuel had left for Miss. about 1825 and Ephraim's daus Anna Thomas and Hannah Glasner were married and living in Guernsey Co. Joseph had 8 boys in all age brackets which is 2 more than we have listed for h im. He had 3 girls which is 1 short- and they were probably too young to have been married. Abraham ages 45 had only 1 son (Robert 12) at home and 5 girls in all age groups. Lucy was married and other daus could have been. Robert was about 37 and had 3 young sons under 10 yrs. plus a male 20-30 probably not his son. He had 3 girls and Hannah Marie not yet born. Robert Ayres was not born yet. William was about 34 yrs old and had 2 sons Elijah and Samuel under 10 yrs and a male 15-20 not identified. He also had a dau Maria under 10 and a female 10-15 not identified. Ephraim Jr. was about 31 yrs old and had 4 boys under 10 yrs which fits. He had 1 girl 5-10. Only 5 of 12 children had been born by 1830 although Joseph came in May 1830. Ephraim Sr. had 1 child 5-10 yrs old living with him who was probably a grandchild. He was listed as 70-80 but strangely his wife was shown as 80-90 although her birth date was 1763 and she was 8 yrs younger than Ephraim. Lucy died Mar 1840 before census taken.
The 1840 census for Guernsey Co, Ohio shows that four of Ephraim's
sons still lived there (Joseph was dead and Samuel had moved to
Mississippi). Ephraim Sr d in 1844. Joseph d in 1833 and his wife
Sarah in 1834. Bulkley and William Jr. were the only grandsons
listed as family heads in 1840. There were two new family heads,
Hiram and Luke S. who have been identified as Virginia Dilleys
living near Cumberland, Spencer twp in the SW corner of Guernsey
Co. They were merchants.
By 1850, the grandsons of Ephraim Sr. were gowing up and establishing
families. The Jackson indices show 17 family heads with the names
of Dille or Dilley, but only 13 of these were descendants of Ephraim
Sr. All of Joseph's children should have been grown by 1850 but
only 2 of his 6 sons are shown as residents of Guernsey Co. Bulkley
was about 37 yrs old and had 6 of his children by 1850, but two
had died in infancy leaving 4 boys and 1 girl. Lorenselar d in
1855. Valentine Joseph, the 2nd son of Joseph , age 35 had 3 boys
and 1 girl all under 10 yrs old.
Abraham b 1785 was 65 yrs old in 1850 and he had only 1 dau the youngest Elizabeth age 25 living with him in 1850. One of Nancy Janes's sons lived with him. Abraham had only one son Robert E. b 1818 who had 4 boys and 2 girls from 1 to 11 yrs of age.
43.
Robert age 56, a blacksmith, had 4 of his youngest children living with him. All were nearly grown with ages from 16 to 25. Three of them had professions listed for them in the census. In addition, his 2nd dau Katherine Dennison and 4 of her 6 children aged 1 to 10 yrs were living with Robert. Two of Katherine's children had died in infancy. Katherine kept having children through 1864, but her husband only died in 1864 which suggests some kind of infirmity. In addition Robert had a blacksmith apprentice age 18 living with him. One of Robert's sons, Samuel Morris age 23 was a blacksmith who was married during 1850.
William Sr. was 52 yrs old and had 8 of his 10 children, all
born before 1850,still living with him in 1850. Oliver was missing
in the 1850 census and may be the Oliver P. a tailor living with
the Turner family in Cambridge. The ages of Wm's children ranged
from 6 to 27. Only Elijah the oldest boy was a family head in
1850. He was 25 and had two children, a boy and a girl ages 2
and 3.
Ephraim Jr. was 50 yrs old in 1850 and all his 12 children had been born by 1845. Six of his children had left the nest and married while the 6 youngest ages 5 to 20 were still living with him. The oldest son Perry Ayres age 28 had 3 children age 3 to 7 yrs. The 2nd son Robert Henry age 27, a carpenter, had 3 young childrenages 1 to 4. The 3rd son Samuel Jefferson age 26 was a plasterer who had a dau age 1. The 4th son Abraham age 22 had one son age 1 yr. .
The Dilley merchants of Cumberland twp had expanded to 3 families in 1850 headed by men 36 to 50 years of age. The oldest, Luke age 50 and his wife Mary age 45, lived without children in 1850. James 45 had 9 children ages 1 to 22 but Rebecca Teener age 22 was his second wife, she was born in Ohio whereas the children listed were born in Va. except the 3 youngest children were born in Ohio, too. Hiram was the youngest of the three Virginia Dilleys who were born in Va.; but he was 36 yrs old and had 4 girls and 1 boy all born in Ohio. Their ages were from 1 to 11 years. The Va. birthplaces of these three men lead me to believe that they belonged to the Virginia Dilley clan.
By 1860 the Dilleys had thinned out considerably in Guernsey Co. as the grandchildren of Ephraim probably moved west. Only Robert now 66 yrs old remained of Ephraim's children. He still had Katherine Dennison and two of her children aged 3 and 12 living with him. Joseph Valentine had 7 of his 11 children by 1860 and this family tended to stay at Senecaville, OH. Buckley age 44 was the next oldest Dilley living in the county. All 7 of his surviving children ages 2 to 21 were living with him in 1860. The other 3 disappeared earlier probably by death during infancy. they were a family of bricklayers and stonemasons. Two of Ephraim Jr's sons were living in Guernsey Co. Abraham age 32 had 6 of his 9 children born by 1860 ages 2 to 11 . William Clark age 28 had 3 young children age 1 to 6 living with him. There was a reduction from 13 Dilley families in 1850 to 5 families in 1860 living in Guernsey Co. The families of the female lines descended from Ephraim have not been documented enough to present data on their descendants which were probably as numerous as those from males.
The Ohio tax lists for 1800-1810 show no Dilleys in Guernsey Co. which agrees with evidence from Ephraim Sr's pension record that he did not move to Guernsey Co until 1614. Senecaville is on the southern edge of Guernsey Co. at the head of a lake and on the edge of Noble Co. to the south. On the west is Muskingum Co. where there are reports that Wm Dilley lived at one time. Cumberland twp is in the SW corner of Guernsey Co. and the Luke and Hiram clan may have spilled over into those counties. Highway 40 runs directly west from Washington, Pa. to Cambridge, Ohio the county seat of Guernsey Co.
