Schneider Family History and Information

Schneider Family History & Information

Heinrich "Henry" Schneider was born about 1821/22 in Hesse Darmstadt, Germany. Parents and siblings are unknown. His wife was Susanna Martin who was born September 1824 in Nassau, Germany. Her father and any siblings are unknown. Her mother was Susanna (nee: ? ) Martin.

Henry Schneider on April 1, 1853 emigrated from the port of Antwerp, Belgium with the destination of the USA. He arrived in New York harbor on May 18, 1853. As for his wife Susanna Martin, she also arrived in the USA in 1853 but I can't be sure if they met before they were here in the Cincinnati area. Not sure where either family was from 1853 thourgh December 1855.

On December 18, 1855, Henry submitted his Declaration of Intentions (DOI) at the Hamilton County Courthouse in Cincinnati. Ohio. He stated on his DOI that he was a native of Hesse Darmstadt, Germany.

Henry and Susanna established themselves in the WestEnd, Brighton area of Cincinnati, Ohio. The lived on Riddle St. and 57 Harrison Ave. From the mid 1890's,  Susanna would live with her daughters families, mainly her youngest daughter Maggie Altheer who lived on 2100th block of Central Ave. Her last residences was at 1629 Central Ave. located straight across the street from the current day Samuel Adams Brewing Company.

They were the parents of five children: Katherine (1855); Anthony (1857); Elizabeth (1859); Mathilda (1861); and Margareth (1865). All the children were born in Cincinnati, Ohio except for Anthony who was born in Northern Kentucky.

While in Cincinnati, Ohio his occupations were as a miller and a distillery worker.

Henry fought for the Union Army during the Civil War. He sign up with the Tenth Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry, Company F. Henry held the rank of private while he served his three year commitment. He was mustered in on June 3, 1861 and was mustered out honorably on June 17, 1864. It has been stated by family that Henry was wounded during the war but no record has been found (see note below:).

Henry Schneider on May 10, 1874,  at the age of 52 years passed away. The cause of death is unknown (see note below:). He was buried on May 12, 1874 at either St. John's Cemetery or Old St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio. This information was found in the Cincinnati Daily Gazette, dated 12 May 1874, page 5, Death Notices..

Susanna (Martin) Schneider passed away on April 29, 1907, at the age of 82 years and 7 months. The cause of death was listed a Senility. She was buried in Section 19, Single, Lot 6 at Old St. Joseph Cemetery, Cincinnati, Ohio. Her burial marker reflects the date of death as 1910 which is incorrect.

Note: A conversation between Vernon Chain and his Mother-in-Law Maggie (Schneider) Altherr. She stated that her father Harry Schneider was wounded in the Civil War and as the result of this wound was the cause of his early death. If she mentioned what the actual wound was, Vernon couldn't remember. In my research of Henry's Civil War information, I did not find that he was wounded in his term of service. I have no doubt that he actually was wounded because the chances are that the majority of the wounded soldiers were not recorded.
