John Murphy & Nancy Ransome Family
Welcome to my ancestors John Murphy and Nancy Ransome family page. John Murphy was the son of a John Murphy Sr. an innkeeper in Dublin, Ireland. As the oral legend goes: At the age of 14, John Murphy would stowaway on a ship bound for america. The ship landed at Norfolk, Virginia and he was indentured for a unknown period of time. It has been told that he was place on another ship to payoff his passage to america. He later lived in Alexandria, Virginia. Around 1800, John, his wife Nancy Ransome Murphy, their son William and their two daughters Elizabeth and Unknown daughter would move to Greenbrier, County, Virginia (present day West Virginia). By 1810, they would move to Murphy Fork of Stillwater Creek, then Floyd County, Kentucky. In 1823, this area became a part of Morgan County, Kentucky. In 1860 a portion of their land became part of Wolfe County, Kentucky. Nancy Ransome, as oral legend goes, states that she had claimed to be a cousin of George Washington and that her father owned land that became part of Washington D.C.. This has been unable to be verified. So, fellow cousins, if any of you have proven one way or another, please let us know. I'm still trying to locate records on this but still drawing blanks. The main families we are researching in our Murphy lines are CREECH, HALSEY, MULLINS, EVANS, BRYANT, WILCOXSON, BOONE and more. My name is Thomas Smith. I was raised in Cincinnati, Ohio. I'm glad that you were able to make it this far. My goal is to trace our families back as far as possible. With the help of a lot of my cousins, family and hundreds of hours in libraries, courthouses, cemeteries and other record holding places I have been able to accumulate information on my family line. Most of this research was done before there were such things as computers or a internet in so many families homes. Our vacations over the years seem to involve libraries, cemeteries, court houses, etc. I got the genealogy bug and do enjoy it, but genealogy work is never done. If anyone has a connection to or an interest in our Murphy family lines, we would be glad to hear from you. I hope that you will find an ancestor or two here, at the same time I hope you can help us piece together our past.
