Botz Family History and Information
Botz Family History and Information

Frederick Botz was born October 1806 in Baden, Germany. Believe Frederick came to america with his parents in the 1830's. By the mid 1840's, the Botz's family was in the Cincinnati, Ohio and Northern Kentucky areas. He married a Margaret Reihle/Rehler in the the mid 1840's. So, this could mean that Margaret was already living in this area. Margaret was born about 1812 in Bavaria, Germany.

Their first son, Johnny was born on 16 Jun 1844, and was baptised at St. Mary's Church, Cincinnati, Ohio. The second son, Joseph was born about 1846. I have been unable to find any information on his birth.

Frederick purchased a farm in Washington Township, Brown County, Sardinia, Ohio in 1847. It consisted of 101 acres and 38 poles of land part of Allen Lathans entry No. 13399. The farm is located on Fite-Hauck Road, just north of George Faul Road. Also, referred to as the "Smith Homestead".

Their last three children were born on the farm in Sardinia, Ohio and were baptized at St. Mary's Church, Arnheim, Ohio. They were: Lewis Augustus Botz on 24 Feb 1849; George Botz on 15 Feb 1852; and Catherine Josephine Botz on 5 Feb 1855.

Before or by 1860, the two oldest sons John and Joseph are no longer with their parents. There is no registered death(s) of  either in Brown County or at St. Mary's Church in Arnheim, Ohio. I can only assume at the ages of 16 and 14 that they left home to start their own lives somewhere else. The timing makes it possible that they may have been in the Civil War.

On 29 Apr 1867, their son Lewis at the age of 18 was trampled to death by a horse. He was buried on 1 May 1867 at St. Mary's Cemetery, Arnheim, Ohio. There is a marker located in the old section. This left Frederick and his wife Margaret with their two youngest children George and Catherine still living on the farm.

When their daughter Catherine was 16 years old, she gave birth (19 Feb 1871) to Wilhelmina (Minnie) Botz out of wedlock. Minnie would live with her grandparents and Catherine departed. She relocated to Cincinnati, Ohio possibly with family.

I found her in the Cincinnati City Directories working as a servant at 965 Central Ave for a couple of years. This was the residance of a Henry Winkler and his family. He was the owner of The Bristle Manufacturing Company at the same location. Prior to her living there, John Peter Smith was employed and lived at this residance. Peter was still working there but had moved to a new residance the same year Catherine moved in. On 23 April 1874 at St. Augustine's Church, Cincinnati, Ohio they were married and would established residence in Cincinnati.

Margaret (Reihle/Rehler) Botz, on 28 Jul 1878, at the age of 65 passed away on the farm in Sardinia, Ohio. A tumor was the cause of death. She is buried at St. Mary's Cemetery in Arnheim, Ohio.

About 1879, their son George married Elizabeth Ernst at St. Mary's Church, Arnheim, Ohio. They would live on his fathers farm until 1882, when George purchased 11 acres of land south of his fathers farm.

Frederick and his granddaughter Minnie lived on his farm until April 1884. By 11 April 1884, they moved in with his daughter Catherine and her husband Peter Smith in South Fairmont, Cincinnati, Ohio.

Frederick Botz on 27 Oct 1884, at the age of 78,  passed away. His last residance was on Lick Run Road, in South Fairmont, Cincinnati, Ohio. The cause of death was congestion of the lungs. Habigs Funeral Home of  Cincinnati handled the funeral and burial services. Frederick is buried in St. Mary's Cemetery, Arnheim, Ohio next to his wife Margaret.
