REVEREND FRANCIS HIGGINSON
Ann Higginson, born 1623, was the daughter of the Reverend Francis Higginson and his wife, Anne Herbert. She married Ensign Thomas Chatfield, and they were the parents of Anna Chatfield, who married Josiah Stansborough in 1670. Their daughter, Anna Stansborough, born July 1, 1679, married Nathaniel Halsey on December 15, 1697, and they were my g-g-g-g-g-g-grandparents.

I do not recollect seeing it stated in any of our early histories. that the family of the Rev. Francis Higginson, of Salem, removed to New Haven after his death. Mrs. Higginson, his widow, died here early in the year 1640. Her estate was the first which came before the court of magistrates for settlement, after the planting of the colony. As the court was guided in their decisions in this case, solely by what they were accustomed to call, the "general rules of righteousness," it may interest some to see a copy of the record. The orthography is not followed. The court was held Feb. 25, 1640.
Mrs. Higginson, late of Quinnipiac, dying without making her will, and leaving behind eight children, an inventory of her estate being taken, the court disposed of her estate and children as followeth, with consent and approbation of Mr. John Higginson, her eldest son.
The said John Higginson, the charges of his education considered, is only to have his father's books, together with the value of five pounds in bedding for his portion.
Francis Higginson, the second son, and Timothy, the third son, their education, also considered, are to have each of them Twenty pounds for their portions.
Theophilus Higginson, though well educated, yet in regard to his helpfulness to his mother and her estate, is to have forty pounds for his portion.
Samuel Higginson, is also to have forty pounds for his portion, and to be with Mr. Eaton as his servant for the full term of two years from the first of March next ensuing.
Theophilus and Samuel are to have the lot, with all the accomodations belonging thereunto, equally to be divided betwixt them, for fifty pounds of their portions.
Ann Higginson, the daughter, is to have forty pounds for her portion, and her mother's old clothes, together with the remainder of the estate, when the debts and other portions are paid.
Charles Higginson, is to have forty pounds for his portion, and to be with Thomas Fugill, as his apprentice, unto the full end and term of nine years, from the first of March next ensuing the date hereof; and the said Thomas Fugill is to find him what is convenient for him as a servant, and to keep him at school one year, or else to advantage him as much in his education as a year's learning comes to; and he is to have the benefit of the use of his portion till the said term be expired, and at the end thereof, to pay it to the said Charles Higginson, if he live till the said nine years be expired, but if he die before, then the said Thomas Fugill is to pay the said portion to the rest of his brothers, that are alive at the end of said nine years.
Neophytus Higginson, being with Mr. Hough in the Bay of Massachusetts, is to remain with him, and be brought up by him, till he attain the full age of twenty one years, and in the mean time, Mr. Hough is to have forty pounds of the estate, which he is to pay to the said Neophytus, at the end of the said term, as his portion. When the farm at Saugus is sold, it is to be equally divided among the brothers.

Death: 06 AUG 1630 in Salem
Note:
In a letter to his wife dated 9 September 1630, Governor
Winthrop included "good Mr. Higginson' in his list of those who
had died "about the beginning of September". 1630 Dudley has
"Mr Higginson, one of the ministers of Salem, a zealous and a
profitable preacher. . . of a fever."
Emigration: 1629
Note:
On 25 April 1629 he, his wife and 8 children sailed from
Gravesend to New England in the Talbot. This
vessel was of 300 tons, 19 guns, and 30 men, commanded by
Thomas Beecher, She "carried about 100 planters, 6 goats, 5
pieces of ordinance, with meal, oatmeal, peas and all manner of
munition of provision for the plantation for a twelve month."
She was one of 3 ships, fitted out at the same time with
emigrants and supplies for the colony. She reached no further
than Cowes by th 5th of May. Mr. Higginson remarked in his
diary that he, his wife and children and 2 maids and some
others obtained leave of the master to go ashore and refresh
us, and wash out linens. On the 6th in the morning a shallop
was seent from the ship to take them to Yarmouth, 8 miles from
Cowes. Since the water was rough the women wanted to be set
ashore about 3 miles short of Yarmouth and so they went by land
to stay in Yarmouth for the night. On the 10th, a Sunday, he
preached on the ship and then was asked to preach in the
afternoon in the town.

Note:
Francis Higginson participated in the organization of the Salem
Church in 1629 and was made teacher, alongside Samuel Skelton
who was made pastor. When signing the agreement to come to New
England he was promised "a man servant to take care and look
after things, and to catch him fish and foule, and provide
other things needfull, and, also two maid servants to look to
his family." In the agreemnt it was mentioned he was allowed
£30 to buy apparel and other articles for the voyage, and £10
more for books, and a free passage for himself, his wife and
children and furniture. His salary for each of three years.
commencing from his arrival at Naumkeag, was to be £30, a house
and land, firewood, and diet. The dwelling and appurtenances
were to be the parsonage for the use of himself and successors
in the ministry. At the expiration of 3 years hw was to have
100 acres of land assigned to him, and of 7 more years 100
acres more. Towards the support of his household, he was to
have the milk of 2 cows, and half the increase of their calves;
the other half, which the cows, the Company were to receive and
the end of 3 years. In case of his decease, his wife, while
remaining widow, and his children, if the former and the later
continued in the plantation, were to be supported at the public
expense. Should he not like to dwell longer in the colony that
the period agreed on, there was to be no charge for a passage
back for himself and his family.
Education: He matriculated at Cambridge from St. John's, Michaelmas 1602,
migrated to Jesus College and received a B. A. 1609/10 and M.
A. in 1613 at St Johns, both of Cambridge University. For
several years he was minister of a parish churchin Leicester,
but his growig dislike of comfority prevented him first from
advancement, and next from commfort at home, so that he gladly
accepted the desire by the Govoror and Company of Massachusetts
Bay for his emigration. 1602 Jesus College, Cambridge

Note:
In a 1629 letter from the Massachusetts Bay Colony Governor
Endicott, :Mr Higginson, a grave man & of worthy commendations"
was one of those appointed to the Council.
Note:
Francis Higginson kept a journal of the transatlantic trip in 1629.
"This day [17 May 1629] my 2 children Samuel and Mary began to
be sick of the smallpox and purples together, which was brought
into the ship by one Mr. Browne, who was sick of the same at
Gravesend, whom it pleased God to make the first occasion of
bringing that contagious sickness among us, wherewith many were
after afflicted. . Tuesday [19th]. . . this day toward night my
daughter grew sicker, and many blue spots were seen upon her
breast, which affrighted us. At the first we thought they had
been the plague tokens, but we found afterwards that it was
only a high measure of the infection of the pox, which were
struck again in the child, and so it was God's will the child
died about 5 o'clock of the night, being the first in our ship
that was buried in the bowels of the great Atlantic sea; which,
as it was grief to us her parents and a sorrow to all the rest,
as being the beginning of a contagious disease and mortality,
so in the same judgment it pleased God to remember mercy in the
child, in freeing it fromm a world of misery wherein otherwise
she had lived all her days, For being about 4 years old a year
since, we know not by what means, swayed in the back, so that
it was broken and grew back crooked, pitiful to see. Since
which she hath had a most lamentable pain in her belly, and
would oft times cry out in the day and in her sleep also, "my
belly!" which declared some extraordinary distemper. So that
in respect of her we had cause to take her death as a blessing
from the Lord to shorten her misery."

Note:
He was ordained deacon on 25 September 1614 at Cawood Castle by
Tobey Mathew, Archbishop of York when he was called curate of
Scredingham, and was ordained priest at Bishopthorpe 8 December
1614. He was instituted by the Archbishop of York 20 April
1615 to the rectory of Barton-in-fabis in the county of
Nottingham, which he resigned 4 April 1616. From 1617 to 1629
he was connected with the parish of St. Nicholas, Leicester,
and styled himself "minister" and afterwards "lecturer".
According to Cotton Mather "The main scope of his ministry was
to promote thorough conversion, and then a godly conversation
among" them. See NEHGR V 6 pp 105-127 for a complete discussion
of his views and incidents that took place both in England and
in New England.
Note:
In the material of the Subsidies of the Clergy in the
Archdeaconry of Leicester in the 17th Century is the following
entry: "Claybrooke John Higginson will pay unto the King the
sum of £3-6-8 per tme [term?] John Higginson. I will pay one
half this p'sent month of October and the other half in April
next. £3-0-8 the one halfe already paid the other £1 [?] mail
prox---- 33-4 [May 1616] He hath promised under his hand to
satisfy y'or Lo'ps request but hath not as get the sum required
and unpaid is £3-6-6. [Associated Architectureal Societies, vol
27, p. 451]

Note:
"Anna Higginson, widow" had a proportional share of 5 1/2 in
the Charlestown hayground in 1635, which was increased to 6 1/2
shares. She had 4 cow commons in 1637 and 5 acres Mystic Side
in the same year. In the allotment of land Mystic Side she had
parcels of 20, 45, and 5 acres. [ChTR19, 20, 33, 27, 36]
She had no entry in the 1638 Charlestown Book of Possessions,
for by that date she must have sold most, if not all, of her
Charlestown property: 4 acres of arable in the east field sold
to Robert Sedgwick; 1/2 acre in Mystic Field sold to Nicholas
Stower; 20 acres in Mysic Field and 45 acres in Waterfield sold
to Matthew Avery in June or July 1638. 5 and 1/2 'marsh lots'
were sold to Robert Long.

Note:
In a list of 'planters' compiled about 1640 "Mrs. Higison"
appeared with a household of 8 and an estate of £250 valued at
£1-8-6. She held 32 1/2 acres in the first division. 6 1/2
acres in the neck, 16 1/2 acres in the meadow, and 66 acres in
the second division. [NHCR 1:93] On 17 March 1640/1 "Mrs.
Higginson" was one of those "who are to have their meadow in
the East Meadow." [NHCR 1:49]

Note:
The estate of Mrs. Higginson, "late planter of Quinnipiac.
dying without making her will and leaving behind 8 children,"
was inventoried and distributed on 25 February 1639/40 with the
consent of "Mr. John Higginson, her eldest son," John
Higginson, the charges of his education considered, received
only his father's books and £5 in bedding; Francis, the 2nd
son and Timothy the 3rd son, their education considered,
received £20 each; Theophilus "though well enough educated,
yet in regard of his helpfulness to his mother & her estate"
received £40; Samuel £40 & to be with Mr. Eaton as his servant
for two years; Theophilus and Samuel to have the lot equally
divided for £50 of their portion; Anne "her daughter" £40 and
her mmother's old clothes and residue; Charles £40 & to be with
Thomas Fugill as his apprentice for 9 years, Fugill to have
charge of his education and to pay him his portion; "Neiphitus
Higginson being with Mr, Hoffe in Nay of Massachusetts , is to
remain there with him & and to be brought up by him till he
attain the full ager of 21 years, & in the meantime Mr. Hough
is to have £40 of the estate, which he is to pay to the said
Neofatus at the end of his said term as his portion. When the
farm in Saugus is sold it is to be equally divided among the
brothers". [NHCR 1:161]
Note:
There was a Hannah / Ann Eaton, daughter of Richard Eaton,
vicar of Trinity Church, Coventry, Warwickshire baptized 20
October 1698 sic[1598]. If she was the wife of John Higginson
as the author believes she was not the mother of Rev. John
Higginson the son whose birth was only a few days after the
date of Richard Eaton's will. This Ann must have been a second
wife. I do not believe that he married Ann Eaton even with the
correction of the typos 1698 for 1598.

Note:
Mrs. Anna Higginson, widow, was admitted as an inhabitant of
Charlestown in 1631 and was on the list of inhabitants of 9
January 1633/4 and January 1635/6.

This is based on the fact he graduated from Jesus College with
a B.A. in 1564/5.
Burial: 19 FEB 1624 Claybrook
Occupation: On 23 January 1571/2 he was made the vicar of Claybrook which
he kept for about 52 years. 1571 Claybrook
Will: 04 DEC 1623
Note:
His will, dated 4 December 1623 was proved on 2 April 1624 by
his widow. He directs that Mr. Picksley, citizen and clothier,
of Coventry, shall convey to his wife Elizabeth and 'such one
of his sons William and Nathaniel as shall be most dutiful, a
cottage in Claybrooke, etc." He also names son John £5,
William, who is to remain with his mother, and Nicholas 3
shillings, and Nathaniel £20. Nicholas Higginson, his grandson
is to receive £10 and grand daughter Priscilla Higginson £5.
From the Act Book of the Common Court of the Bishop of Lincoln
in the Archdeaconry of Leicester it appears that probate was
allowed on the will of John Higginson, later vicar of
Claybrook, presented by Francis Higginson, of the city of
leicester and Thomas Coleman of Stretton Parva.
Note:
Tradition in the family says that he died when 104 and was
drowned by a sudden rising of a brook as he was returning from
church.

Note:
Francis Higginson had just began his university studies at Cambridge when Anne was sent there by her mother. He got his B.A. from Cambridge in the Arts but then continued and got his Master's in Divinity, marrying Anne Herbert immediately after completing his studies, in Nottingham, where he was temporarily assigned by the Archbishop but never served.

(Research): Rev. Francis Higginson was the first pastor at Salem, Essex, MA. Rev. Higginson was an Anglican clergyman. He drafted the confession of faith and covenant for the church at Salem, Essex, MA in 1629. Several of his papers exist today, and the Publication "The Anals of America" published by Encyclopedia Britannica Inc. in 1968 has an article written by Rev. Higginson on pg. 95.

CHURCH MEMBERSHIP: Francis Higginson participated in the organization of Salem church in 1629, and was made teacher, a longside SAMUEL SKELTON who was made pastor [Perley 1:151-7 0].
EDUCATION: Matriculated at Cambridge from St. John's, Michaelmas 1602, migrated to Jesus College, B.A. 1609-10, M.A. 1 613 [Venn 2:368; Morison 380-81]. Wife Anne was also quite
literate [WP 3:22-23].
OFFICES: In the 1629 letter from the Massachusetts Bay Comp any to Governor Endicott, "Mr. Higgeson, a grave man & of worthy commendations," was one of those appointed to the Council [MBCR 1:386, 407].
ESTATE: "Anna Higginson, widow," had a proportional share of 5½ in Charlestown hayground in 1635, which was increased to 6½ shares [ChTR 19, 20]. She had four cow commons in 1 637 [ChTR 33], and five acres Mystic Side in the same year [ChTR 27]. In the allotment of land Mystic Side she had p arcels of twenty, forty-five and five acres [ChTR 36].
The widow Higginson had no entry in the 1638 Charlestown Book of Possessions, for by that date she had sold most , if not all, of her Charlestown property: four acres of ar able in the East Field, sold to Robert Sedgwick [ChBOP 2] ; one-half acre in Mystic Field, sold to Nicholas Stower [ChBOP 13]; twenty acres in Mystic Field and forty-five acre s in Waterfield, sold to Mathew Avery by "the assigns of Mrs. Ann Higginson" in June or July 1638 [ChBOP 45, 92]; and "five marsh lots and a half" sold to Robert Long [ChBOP 1 16].
In the list of "planters" at New Haven, compiled about 1 640, "Mrs. Higison" appeared with a household of eight an d an estate of £250, valued at £1 8s. 6d.; she held 32½ acr es in the first division, 6½ acres in the neck, 16½ acres of meadow and 66 acres in the second division [NHCR 1:93]. O n 17 March 1640/1 "Mrs. Higginson" was one of those "who are to have their meadow in the East Meadow" [NHCR 1:49].
The estate of Mrs. Higginson, "late planter of Quinnipia c, dying without making her will and leaving behind her eig ht children," was inventoried and distributed on 25 Februar y 1639/40 with the consent of "Mr. John Higginson, her eldest son." John Higginson, the charges of his education consi dered, received only his father's books and £5 in bedding ; Francis Higginson "the second son" & "Timothy the third son," their education considered, received £20 each; Theophilus, "though well educated, yet in regard of his helpfulness to his mother & her estate," received £40; Samuel Higgins on £40 & to be with Mr. Eaton as his servant for two years ; Theophilus & Samuel to have the lot equally divided for £ 50 of their portion; Anne Higginson, "her daughter," £40 an d her mother's old clothes and residue; Charles Higginson £ 40 & to be with Thomas Fugill as his apprentice for nine years, Fugill to have charge of his education and to pay hi m his portion; "Neiphitus Higginson being with Mr. Hoffe i n Bay of Massachusetts, is to remain there with him & to be brought up by him till he attain the full age of twenty-one years, & in the meantime Mr. Hough is to have £40 of the estate, which he is to pay to the said Neofatus at the end of the said term as his portion. When the farm at Saugus is sold it is to be equally divided among the brothers" [NHCR 1:29-31].
On 8 April 1645 "Captain Turner having received eighteen pounds eighteen shillings of Mrs. Higginson's estate, an d John Wakeman fifteen pounds also of the said estate, hav e both severally engaged their houses at Newhaven unto the court of Newhaven for the true payment thereof" [NHCR 1:1 61].

DEATH: Salem 6 August 1630 [Hubbard 120]. (In a letter to h is wife dated 9 September 1630, Governor John Winthrop incl uded "good Mr. Higginson" in his list of those who had die d recently [WP 2:312]. In his accounting of those who had died "about the beginning of September" 1630 Dudley has "Mr. Higginson, one of the ministers of Salem, a zealous an d a profitable preacher ... of a fever" [Dudley 72].)
MARRIAGE: St Peter's, Nottingham, 8 January 1615/6 Anne Herbert [NEHGR 64:88]. After her husband's death she resided f or a time at Charlestown, and then moved to New Haven. She died at New Haven by 25 February 1639/40 [NHCR 1:28].
