Halsey Cemetery
located in Piney Creek, Alleghany County, North Carolina
Our sincere THANKS to Sharon Gray for allowing us to display her photos of the Halsey Cemetery, located in Piney Creek, NC, on the Halsey Family Resource Page. Our THANKS also to James Brown for submitting the photos.
(the following note is from Sharon
Gray)
It is located on Phipps Dairy Road which is a gravel road. It is
a little remote and is actually next to a barn. It is fenced and
well maintained, partially because the Phipps are descendants of
William and Rachel Halsey. There are some unmarked stone slabs
next to William and Rachel's stones. Their son, William, remained
on that land and he is buried in the cemetery. The other
tombstones are dated in the 1800s. Because the stones are stained
and difficult to read in the pictures, here is what they say:
RACHEL COBB
1762 - 1847
WIFE OF WM HALSEY
and
WILLIAM HALSEY
NEW JERSEY
PVT CAPT WM E. IMLAY'S 7 CO
REVOLUTIONARY WAR
MARCH 28 1760 FEB 21 1832

Driving instructions submitted by [email protected]
Please feel free to post my directions. They start if you are traveling south on I-81. William and Rachel are my 4th great grandparents. My parents have lived in Piney Creek on the farm next to the Phipps farm since 1961. My mother's maiden name is Halsey.
-------------
Take interstate 81 to Marion, Va. Take Highway 16 exit (I do not
know the exit number.) At the end of the exit ramp you turn left
back under the interstate.
Follow Hwy. 16 for about 25-30 throught the mountains. Hwy. 16
becomes Hwy. 58 in Volney, VA. Keep going straight toward Mouth
of Wilson and Independence, VA.
Follow Hwy. 58 about 5-6 miles and you will see signs for North
Carolina. Take a right onto Hwy. 113 and it will lead you across
the NC state line (one mile). About 1/2 past the state line, take
a left onto Hwy. 93.
Follow Hwy. 93 for about 1/2 miles and turn left onto Phipps
Dairy Road. It is the first left on Hwy. 93. Take the road to the
top of the hill and it will turn left. Keep following the road
and the cemetery is located on the left.
