published early editions of Tennyson and many New England authors), in 1845 "Ticknor,
Reed and Fields", and by 1854, the then-well-known imprint of "Ticknor &
Reed." During this time they purchased the "Atlantic Monthly" and the
"North American Review." After his death his sons continued the firm, which
after various changes became absorbed into the house of Houghton Mifflin Co. The
publications of the house were always characterized by intrinsic merit and the neatness
and correctness of their typography. Mr. Ticknor was the first American publisher to make
pre-payment for the works of foreign authors. For many years the office of the firm was an
old building on the corner of Washington and School Streets, familiar in illustrated works
on Boston as the "Old Corner Bookstore." This was the resort of Dickens,
Emerson, Hawthorne, Holmes, Longfellow, Lowell, Sumner, Thackery, Whipple, Whittier, and
many others, of whom Mr. Ticknor was friend and adviser, as well as publisher. Hawthorne
was undoubtedly his closest friend in the group, and for an account of his relations with
him, covering many years, and many extended trips see "Hawthorne and His
Publisher," by Caroline Ticknor, 1913.
