most difficult branches of the study of
the eye is the fitting of glasses for
failing eyesight, and to relieve many
reflex disturbances caused by errors of

His success in the practice of medi-
cine during his residence in Shawnee,
is evidence that his thorough prepara-
tion and experience is appreciated.
He was united in marriage with Miss
Georgia Stoopingarner, of New Phila-
delphia, Ohio, in 1904.
He is a member of the I. O. R. M.,
of Hemlock, the Modern Woodmen,
of New Philadelphia, and the Knights
of Pythias, at Washingtonville.
This gentleman is one of the promin-
ent and successful merchants of Shaw-
nee. He is the son of John and Mary
Griffith, and was born in Coshocton
County, in 1869. He came to Shawnee
when a boy, was educated at the public
schools, worked in coal mines, then
clerked for J. L. Davis and Co., was
with Mr. William Davey fourteen
years, then purchased the store of him
in 1902. Increasing trade compelling
him to move to larger quarters, he
purchased the Obear Hotel building,
and converted it into a handsome and
commodious store, with floor space of
1,800 square feet. Energy and ability
have brought their reward. Mr. Grif-
fith now has a large trade and enjoys
the confidence of all who know him.
He is prominent as a Mason, active
in the social and religious life of the
town, and rated as one of Shawnee's
citizens who is ever ready with sub-
stantial efforts to advance her interests.

Mr. Steffen is a Republican and was
elected Mayor of Rendville in 1908.
He is prominent in fraternal orders
and is very popular.
AARON T. REED
Mr. Reed is a native of Roanoke
County, Virginia. He came to Rend-
ville in 1902 and engaged in mining.
In 1905 he opened a general store on
Main Street, and has been very suc-
cessful; carries groceries, dry goods,
confectionery, cigars, and a general
line. Enjoys a large and growing
trade. Is prominent in Republican
politics and takes a keen interest in
the town's affairs. Fraternally, he is
a K. of P.
REV. N. S. MERRITT Rev. N. S. Merritt, present pastor
of the Missionary Baptist Church at
Rendville, O., was born in Greene
County, O., 1859, and is the son of
Jolliston and Jane Merritt. He was
educated in the Xenia High School
and obtained his theological degree in
Indianapolis. Was licensed in 1888

and preached two years with great
success in Zion Baptist Church, Circle-
ville. After eight years in Mechanics-
burg and two in Ironton, he came to
Rendville, and now has one of the
largest congregations in the county.
He married Miss Martha Mosely, in
1887. They have one daughter, Mrs.
Myrtle Peters, of Athens.
Rev. Merritt is an enthusiastic and
eloquent worker in the field of the
Master. He is prominent in all
Church work, serving as Moderator of
the Eastern and Western Union Con-
ferences, and is now clerk of the
Providence Association. He is also
a K. of P. and I. O. O. F., and has
been honored by the offices in these
orders.
J. L. JONES Joseph L. Jones, present postmaster
and merchant of Rendville, was born
in Meigs County, Ohio, July 13, 1857,
and is the son of Joseph and Temper-
ance Jones. Came to Rendville in
1881. Worked in the mines, organ-
ized the cooperative store, purchased
the entire interest in same and now
conducts a general store in the town
of Rendville. Is an active Republican.
and in 1897 President McKinley ap-
pointed him postmaster. He has been
active and serviceable in the town's
affairs, serving on the School Board,
and as member of the Council. He is
a Methodist in religion and a K. of P.
fraternally. He married Sadie D.
Bradis, of Columbus, in 1887, and four
children bless the union. Mr. Jones
has made a careful official and has the
confidence of all who know him.
