Entrance on Highland Ave.

Old gatehouse sat on the corner and is still in existence - the original drive into the cemetery was on east side of the gatehouse.

E. Ernest Gassmann 1888-1920
Notes: Born NE (specific location not known).

Son of Eberhart Wilhelm & Elise (Gerber Gutzwiller) Gassman (see below).
He was employed as a baker. Had a severe case of flu during epidemic of 1918 and was permanently impaired.
His grave is one of the oldest in Mountain View Cemetery, near the original gatehouse.
His parents (see next) are buried across the cemetery "street" and to the north.

E. Wilhelm Elisa C.
1860 - 1934 1850 - 1935

Notes: Eberhart Wilhelm Gassman was born in Germany. Elisabeth "Elise" Gerber was born in Aarwangen, Bern, Switzerland. She married (first) to Virgil Friedrich Gutzwiller of Basel, Switzerland. They immigrated with a young son, Emil. Virgil Gutzwiller died 10 Aug 1885 in Carlyle, Clinton, IL. Elise married E.W. Gassman, 18 Jul 1887 at Carlyle, IL. Their son E. Ernest Gassman was born 1888 in NE. Gassman's operated a bakery on Eleventh Street in Columbus, Platte, NE (1891 Gazetteer). They retired in 1909 to live on an orange grove purchased in San Bernardino, CA. Both of Elise's sons died as young men. Her only surviving close relative in the USA was grandson, Victor Gutzwiller.
Gassman's lived near an old friend, Joseph Bucher (who had also resided in Columbus, NE). Joe Bucher was deceased (before 1938?), and his wife passed away about 1939-40. My Father used to check on Mrs. Bucher & her sister. Recall stopping there one day, being told to "stand right there & don't move" at the bottom of the porch steps. Both women were ill, and Dad called for emergency transportation to the hospital. (Elise had been godmother to a child of the Bucher's that died in infancy in Columbus, NE.)

Elsie Gustava (Stromberg) Mielak

Born 14 Apr 1905 near Genoa, NE.

Parents: August Stromberg and Emma Carlson.

Died 27 Dec 1996 at San Bernardino, CA.

Married Jacob Jame Mielak (1905-1972) on 22 Sep 1937 at Columbus, NE.

They had one son, David.

Her husband: Jake Mielak, is buried at St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Columbus, Platte, NE.
They had one son, born in California (Believe they moved to CA before 1942).
Elsie's parents were August J. & Emma A. (Carlson) Stromberg "of Genoa", NE.
Her stepmother: May Augusta Amanda (Nelson Anderson) Stromberg (widow of J. "Charlie" Anderson).
August & Emma Stromberg (first wife) are buried at Friends Cemetery in Platte County, NE.
May Stromberg is buried at Genoa, Nance, NE

(Her parents & siblings are buried at West Hill Cemetery, Platte Co, NE).

Oddment: Jake Mielak had "shingles" (late 1940's?) and was hospitalized in the
"cottage" part of the Loma Linda Hospital for some time. Remember him as exceptionally kind man
who helped me roller skate on cement for the first time. (Believe they had just moved west at the time.)

Albert Julius & Ethel Amelia (Stromberg) Person

Albert Julius Person - Born 15 Nov 1899, Kalvsvik, Kronoberg, Sweden.

Son of Frithiof Hilding & Elna Matilda "Tilda" (Carlsdotter) Person -
immigrated as toddler to Columbus, Platte, NE. (Traveled with his mother, to join his father.)

Al died 2 Apr 1986, San Bernardino, CA.

His parents and some siblings are buried in Columbus, Platte, NE.

Ethel Amelia Stromberg - Born 5 Jun 1905 on farm in Platte County, near Genoa, NE.

Daughter of Oscar "Karl" & Anna "Julia" (Carlson) Stromberg.

Ethel died 8 Feb 1994. San Bernardino, CA.
Both of Ethel's parents are buried at Valley View Cemetery, Genoa, NE.
Ethel's stepmother was Anna (Anderson) Hanson (widow of Olof Hanson).

Anna is buried with her first husband at Friends Cemetery, Platte Co., NE.

Ethel & Al "ran off" to get married 1 Aug 1924 in Council Bluffs, IA.

They lived in Columbus, NE until 1941 when moved to San Bernardino, CA with two daughters.

Notes: Ethel's half-sister Ruth Viola Stromberg (3 Jan 1912- 26 Apr 1982)

married first to Albert Person's brother Carl Oscar Person (22 Jun 1903 - 3 Feb 1980)

They had 3 sons. Divorced.

Two sons - Richard and Ronald - are deceased, buried at Columbus City Cemetery, Columbus, NE.

Ruth married second to Harold A. Lunn (2 July 1905 - 6 Feb 1984).

Lunns are buried at Valley View Cemetery, Genoa, NE.

Carl "Hap" married second to Helen Miller (24 Jul 1907-1 Mar 1989).

Helen had been previously married to Martin Motiska. Had one daughter.

After Carl's death, Helen married Lloyd Herbert Kennedy (9 Sep 1981 at Las Vegas, NV)

Carl & Helen Person are buried at Green Acres Memorial Park, Bloomington, CA.

Lloyd Kennedy is buried at Montecito Cemetery, south of San Bernardino, CA.
