Obituary in Woodville Republican Sept 1947:

"Mrs. Addie Netterville Buried At Wilkinson"

The last chapter of a Wilkinson Countian was penned February 12, 1947, at noon time in Nashville, Tenn., after three and one half years of bedridden sickness, when Mrs. Charles Thomas Netterville, Sr. passed on to her resting place as the death angel visited her son William's home.

Born Addie Ellen Carter, she had a very unexciting but interesting and successful life; a life that we, her acquaintances and friends, as well as relatives, can hold forth in great pride, respect, and admiration. She was born in the pre-slavery days in Wilkinson county on March 26, 1859, the daughter of Jesse Carter and Cynthia Ann Lanehart, four months after her father's death. She was a great, great grandchild of "The King" Robert Carter of Va., sixth removed from General Robert E. Lee, that is her great, great grandfather and General Lee's grandfather was the same man.

Addie Ellen lost her mother at the age of five. Her grandmother cared for and schooled her for the next two years until she passed from this world, thus terminating the young child's schooling. She then was taken in custody by her older half brother, Isaac Carter, where she worked in her younger days as a nursemaid and also performed general domestic duties for him and his wife, Eula.

Four half-brothers, two half-sisters and herself survived her parents. When only thirteen years old her brother, Dave, who was only a few years older, set up house keeping and by mutual agreement got his young sister to keep house for him. Several years later Dave married Lizzy Havard. Addie Ellen remained with them.

On January 8, 1878 Addie Ellen Carter married Charles Thomas Netterville. Theysettled and lived in the fourth district of Wilkinson County, on what is now known as the Frogmore place. Four years later they moved to the fifth district to the old grange hall and therfrom grew what is now the Wilkinson settlement.

Mrs. Netterville has the distinction of being the first Post Mistress of Wilkinson. She founded and organized the Wilkinson Poast Office which is now serving most of the fourth and fifth district of this county.

She was baptised into "The Church of Christ" early in life and her devoted faithfulness to God was one of the contributing factors to the successful growth of the Church in this county. The fact is that she found and won friends and was loved by all who were so fortunate to have made her acquaintance. It can be truly said that "She lived for others", her influence and teachings have been molded into the lives of her descendants who have scattered to many states and established themselves as leaders in all professions of life: doctors, engineers, clergymen, lawyers and business men, and many others.

In short--as was expressed by Brother Paul Tucker at the funeral service: "She was a Christian, and lived a life as taught by the New Testament."

The remains were brought to Wilkinson, and at three p.m. on Friday, February 14, 1947 funeral services were held at the Church of Christ, conducted by Brother Paul Tucker of Natchez, Mississippi. The remains were intered in the family burial grounds near the old home, and the grave was covered by a most exquisite profusion of beautiful flowers sent by friends from all sections of the country as well as local.

She is survived by six children, twenty-six grandchildren, and twenty-two great grandchildren. Her children were and are: Ethel Netterville Cavin, Mary Netterville Cassels, Katherine Netterville, deceased, Lydia Netterville Gasquet, deceased, Jessie Netterville Flowers, Charlie Thomas Netterville, William M. Netterville, Annie Sessions Netterville, deceased and Winona Ellen Netterville Laroussini.

To these bereaved loved one we extend our since condolence in the loss they have sustained. --Contributed
