This site is provided as support for the AUS-VIC-NE (North East) mailing list.
The mailing list is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in family, local and regional history relating to the North East area of the state of Victoria in Australia. For the purpose of this list, the North East is defined as that area of Victoria, north and east of Melbourne (but not including Melbourne and its surrounds), south of the New South Wales border and north of the Great Dividing Range. To be more exact, the shires of Moira, Greater Shepparton and Strathbogie form the western boundary.
The major towns included are Beechworth, Benalla, Bright, Chiltern, Cobram, Corryong, Eskdale, Euroa, Mansfield, Mt Beauty, Myrtleford, Nathalia, Rutherglen, Shepparton, Tallangatta, Violet Town, Wangaratta, Wodonga/Albury and Yarrawonga.
The List is dedicated to matters relating to the North East area of Victoria - if you wish to post material that is not related to this area , GENANZ-L and AUS-VIC are the more appropriate lists. For more details of mailing lists in neighbouring areas see under Related Mailing Lists . For a list of all Rootsweb Australian mailing lists, go to http://resources.rootsweb.com/world/Australia.html
My name is Peter Lakeman and I am the administrator of this list. I have no personal
expertise of this area and created this list because a large number of my ancestors came
from this area (although I live in a different part of Victoria), so it is unlikely that I
can help with specific enquiries on families, etc. It is better that these posts be sent
to the list. My role is that of administrator (keeping the list running as smoothly as
possible and setting some rules and guidelines) and also providing a support website. My
email address is

This site is supported by Rootsweb and in turn supports Rootsweb.
To limit the downloading time of some pages, it has been necessary (in some cases) to create different pages for the separate areas. A number of different ways of dividing up the area could have been made, each with its own advantages and disadvantages. Wherever necessary, on this website, the current shire boundaries have been selected, as no major towns are split, boundaries are generally in the less populated areas, and in some cases, the old shire records may have been centralised into one place in the shire, since shire amalgamation.
