This site is provided as support for the AVG (AUS-VIC-GIPPSLAND) mailing list.
We believe in the Free and Friendly Exchange of Information, and that research into Family and Local History should be Fun.
This is a discussion area for anyone who has an interest in family, local and regional history relating to the Gippsland area. For the purpose of this list, Gippsland is that area of the state of Victoria, Australia, east of Dandenong (an eastern suburb of Melbourne), north of the coast, south of the Great Dividing Range, through to the NSW border. The main towns include Warragul, Leongatha, Korumburra, Morwell, Traralgon, Sale, Maffra, Bairnsdale, Orbost and Omeo.
The List is dedicated to matters Gippslandish - if you wish to post non-Gippsland material, GENANZ-L, AUS-VIC and AUSTRALIA-L are the more appropriate lists. For more details see under Related Mailing Lists .
Gippsland History
Several Aboriginal groupings have occupied Gippsland since before time began to be recorded. European occupation generally began about 1835, with Westernport and Benambra being earliest settlement points. Port Albert was the port of entry from 1841. The first streams in the main European settlement push came from both the Monaro in New South Wales, and in through Port Albert. The 1840s were a time of large squatters, gold was discovered in the early 1850s and was significant through to 1900. Selection, where settlers were able to make land freehold, began in the early 1860s, but was most active in the 1870s. From the 1860s to about 1900 paddle and screw steamers on the extensive Gippsland Lakes system were an important part of local history.
