Wellington Region: Our History [Gippsland Times Millenium Issue]

I have just collected an early copy of the Gippsland Times "Millenium Issue", "Wellington Region: Our History", which will be distributed next Tuesday, although it bears the date of 1 January 2000. And many, many congratulations go to Peter Synan, who was historical editor, no doubt with the able assistance of Ann.

This is the first attempt to publish a comprehensive history of what is now the Shire of Wellington. It is 96 pages, on high-quality newsprint, tabloid size and is extensively illustrated. Around about half is adds and half serious historical articles, but even the adds are fascinating as most have taken the trouble to detail the history of the business.

The major articles are: the Gunai-Kurnai, European Exploration, Port Albert, Yarram, Migrants, Sale, Transport, Wars, RAAF Base, Gold, Oil and Gas, Racing, Closer Settlement, High Country, Heyfield and District, Stratford, Maffra and District, Rosedale and District, Swing Bridge.

It will be available in all newsagents in the shire on Tuesday - check with your local newsagent for Bairnsdale and Traralgon. Otherwise you can order it from the Gippsland Times at 74-76 Macalister Street, Sale, 3850. It costs $4 an issue, plus post - possibly around $2.50 would cover that.

It would also be remiss of me if I did not point out that, in the original discussions, the Times considered commissioning work, but I understand the final agreement was that historians would work gratis, in return for the Times having more of the paper microfilmed. So this is a double gift that the Times, Gippsland's oldest operating newspaper, has given to the historical community. It has done so to mark its establishment in 1860, and first issue in 1861 - 140 years of operation. David Tulloch, general manager of the Times, who has driven this, as he has many other historical projects, is also most deserving of our gratitude for this wonderful issue.

The Wonnangatta Mystery: An Inquiry into the Unsolved Murders

I have just picked up my copy of "The Wonnangatta Mystery: An Inquiry into the Unsolved Murders" by Keith Leydon and Michael Ray. I got my copy at Collins in Sale for $25 (well, $24.95, but who is counting???). It is published by Warrior Press, Box 549 Mansfield 3724, ph 03-5779 1599, and is 134 pages. At a glance it appears to have a few new photos, and as the authors have long had a fascination with the subject, they have some new theories or angles to advance. I have just about lost track of how many books there are now, of various probitity, on the 1918 murders at this remote cattle station north of Crooked River. This one flies a number of new kites that have not been flown before.

Secrets of the Ghost Towns of the Mountain Goldfields

I have just picked up a copy of "Secrets of the Ghost Towns of the Mountain Goldfields" by Luke Steenhuis. This is a more professional print, and considerably updated, of the version that was around a few years ago as a photocopy. It should not be confused with his other book, "Secrets of Ghost Towns of the High Country".

The sub-title for the new one is now "Featuring 50 Former Towns in and around Melbourne's North-East Mountain Region" I picked my copy up for $17.95 in the Traralgon newsagency, I assume it is around in other outlets. It is distributed by Australian Bush and Country Maps, Ph 03-5964 7011. It is 92 pages, profusely illustrated with maps and quite a few photos I haven't seen before. For those unfamiliar with Luke's books, they take the form of an alphabetical list of the towns, usually one to a page, sometimes with an old map, somethimes with a photo, sometimes with both. It does have an index. Towns and areas in this book are shown below. Many of the towns have so many alternate names it is not possible to list them, but they do appear in the index.

The book covers: A1 Mine Settlement Aberfeldy Aberfeldy Crossing Alhambra All Nations BB Township Beenak Black River Blue Jacket Britannia Township Brooklyn Town Brunton Cannon's Town Cherry's Point Concord Gully Coopers Creek Cumberland Darlingford Donovans Creek (inc. Chesterville and Walkers) Donnellys Creek Edwards Reef Enoch's Point Fernshaw (Watts River) Fulton's Creek Gaffney's Creek Gooley's Creek Granton Happy Go Lucky (Pearson) Howqua Hills Jericho Kevington Knockwood Loch Fyne Maidentown Matlock Mormontown New Chum Old Warburton Paradise Plains Red Jacket Reefton Russells Creek Seaton St Clair Store Point Tangil Ten Mile (Sailor Bills) The Springs Toombon Tullamore Upper Thomson Victors Quartz Violet Town Walhalla Woods Point Wyetown

Folie a deux: William and Caroline Dexter in Colonial Australia

I have just picked up a copy of "Folie a deux: William and Caroline Dexter in Colonial Australia" for $25 from Traralgon newsagency. It is by Patrick Morgan, and is 173 pages. It details the life of a couple who lived in Stratford and were involved in Sale for some time, and as such several chapters provide an interesting picture of Gippsland around 1860. There is also some interesting reflection on Angus McMillan. Publisher is Quakers Hill Press, 6 Caper Place, Quakers Hill, NSW 2763.

Nyerimilang

The Friends of Nyerimilang have commissioned a history of Nyerimilang (a
property overlooking the Gippsland Lakes at Nungurner, not that far from
Lakes Entrance) from Marion Le Cheminant, which covers the various fortunes
of the area from selection in the 1880s to the present and includes a
detailed account of the establishment of the property as a heritage park.
The book is copiously illustrated and contains an extensive index of names.

The official launch will be on October 8th but advanced copies may be
obtained from the web site below.
