The City of Bairnsdale
Formed when, as the Town of Bairnsdale, it ceded from the Shire of Bairnsdale on 31 May
1967. It includes Lucknow and part of Wy Yung.
Shire of Bairnsdale
Localities: Bengworden, Boggy Creek, Boole Poole, Broadlands, Bullumwaal, Calulu, Clifton
Creek, Coongulmerang, Delvine, Deptford, Eagle Point, Fernbank, Flaggy Creek, Forge Creek,

Created a District on 30 Apr 1867 and proclaimed a Shire on 14 Jul 1868. The Shire of Tambo was created from part of the Shire of Bairnsdale on 6 Jan 1882. Part of the Shire of Bairnsdale annexed to Avon on 27 May 1914 and again on 1 Oct 1964. The Town (later City) of Bairnsdale was created from the central riding on 31 May 1967.

Rate Books: Apart from the first rate book, for 1867-69, all the books for the period until 1915 were destroyed many years ago. Those from 1915 to 1927 have been microfiched, as have minutes from 1867-1980, Committees 1874-1903 and Engineers Reports 1897-1903. They are available at the EGFHG and EGHS. An index to the 1867/68 rate book is held EGHS.

Created as the Shire of Croajingolong from part of the Shire of Tambo on 30 May 1892. Named changed to the Shire of Orbost on 17 Feb 1893. Part annexed to the Shire of Tambo on 3 Jan 1913.

Annexed from the Shire of Bairnsdale and proclaimed the Shire of Tambo on 6 Jan 1882. Part severed and proclaimed the Shire of Orbost on 30 May 1892. Part of the Orbost was annexed back to Tambo constituting the Cunninghame Riding on 3 Jan 1913.

Rate Books: The Rate Books (1882-195 1 ) and Minutes (1882-1965) are held at the Public Record Office. Rate Books have been microfiched and are available at the Lakes Entrance Family History Group and Lakes Entrance Library.
Rate and Minute Books for the Shire of East Gippsland were last known to be held at Lakes Entrance. A substantial number of years for all the shire have been microfilmed and are subject to an ongoing microfilming project.
