| NOTES: 1.
The purpose of this page/site is the identification
of sources of data on the various Stokes families,
names of other researchers who are willing
to be contacted, data on our Stokes branches and others who
are willing to display theirs, and interpretations of data
not found in most data bases. The data sources to be listed
will include public sources, commercial sources, private
sources, and mailing list archives; but, there will be no
attempt to copy data from these sources except as necessary
to compare or interpret.
2. The purpose of this page can be fulfilled without infringement of
copyrights, which would also be a violation of the rules of the host. Anyone considering
reproduction of material published or posted by others may want to first take a look at
restrictions shown at:
http://www.loc.gov/copyright/
http://www.loc.gov/copyright/title17/chapter1.pdf
http://www.usgenweb.org/volunteers/copyright.html
3. If you want to post your family tree to
this site and do not have it in a form you consider to be suitable, send us a message and
we can make arrangements to make the conversion. Free software is available that does a
beautiful job of converting GEDs to web pages. You should be able to export a GED file
from any genealogical software you are using.
4. From the perspective of the writer, scholarship and
intellectual maturity in our quest for Stokes history are advanced considerably when
current researchers dig into original source documents and critically examine information,
assumptions, and conclusions presented and/or published by others. This may be
uncomfortable for some who would prefer to accept published texts and family traditions
without question, but it is hoped that we can disagree without being disagreeable and
agree that truth is most likely to emerge when there is a critical examination of all data
presented.
