Steedman, Lexington Co., South Carolina

A plat of the Town of Steedman, Lexington Co., South Carolina, dated March 14, 1899, appears in Lexington County Deed Book NN, page 510. This town was laid out on the plantation home site of Colonel John Marcellus Steedman, and the post office established there (officially named Steedman) was discontinued before the middle1930's.

Joseph E. Steadman, Sr. sends authentic information concerning his family name and the town in Lexington County named for his patronym: "The family name (as shown in family records, census records, deeds, etc.) was Steedman until after the 1880 census was taken. My father (born Henry Spann Steedman) and his brothers, sons of Colonel John Marcellus Steedman, then changed the spelling of the family name to Steadman in order to avoid the then popular mispronunciation, Stidman."

Joseph Steadman always thought he was a descendant of the Scotsman, John Steedman. However, a 1st cousin of his, who participated in the Stidham* DNA Project, proved they were direct, biological descendants of Timen Stiddem. Hence, the town named after his grandfather has been added to the Stidham* Place Name database.
