Fort Steadham (historical)

Portion of a map of Montague Co., Texas, showing "Fort Stedham" east of Forestburg.
(From Montague County Pictures of the Past, The Donning Company Publishers, Virginia Beach, Virginia, 2008)

"After the Civil War, Indian raids were still a problem in this area [Montague Co., Texas]. Ben [1198] Steadham (my great-grandfather) worked with the organization that is now called the Texas Rangers to build Fort Steadham, later called Fort Bingham. It was located on Bingham Creek east of Forestburg. There exists now a soil conservation lake on the site but the Historical Society has recently been presented the mill stone from the Fort. There is no visual existence of this Fort except a drawing my Mother [Veda Brogdon] did during the Centennial of Forestburg in 1957. There were three old men who described it to her and she sketched it.” (Written by Margie Brogdon Hess, email dated 24 June 2008)
