THE FISHING GILCHRISTS

The following family line is that of the "Fishing Gilchrists" of Campbeltown. Most of the members of this large family have made their living from fishing, or related occupations.

Archibald Gilchrist, a joiner by trade, married Rachel McKendrick, daughter of John and Mary Fleming McKendrick, on May 9, 1820 in Killean and Kilchenzie Parish; she was born on April 4, 1795. There is definite possibility that he was the son, born Nov. 6, 1794, to William and Mary Milloy Gilchrist of Corputechan Farm. This theory is based on: (1) Similarity of family names -- particularly "Donald", "Agnes", and "William"; (2)relationship of birthdate to marriage date; (3) John McKendrick was farmer in neighboring North Killocraw Farm in 1795 (KINTYRE-COUNTRY-LIFE by Angus Martin, page 139).
