THE CORPUTECHAN GILCHRISTS

John Gilchrist was born in 1721, and died in 1790, according to his Kilchenzie Cemetery gravemarker; it also notes that he married Elizabeth Bannatyne -- born 1724 and died Feb. 17, 1789. Also found on the marker is "late of Corputechan" and an indication that the marker was erected by their son, Duncan. In an old lease (tack) found in the Duke of Argyll’s estate records in Inverary comes the following information:

"Duncan and John Gilchrist - Lease of 19 years from 1757 of 2 merklands of Corputechan (Farm) to above presently in Killicraw (Farm) at 15 pounds sterling, 1 boll nulture meal, 2 bolls teind bear and 24 carriages yearly (carriage = 1 cartload of peat, etc.), and 10 shillings sterling for each goat kept."

C. Duncan Gilchrist - born in 1764. There is little doubt that it is his name inscribed on his parents' Kilchenzie Cemetery gravemarker. As of 1792 when the Duke of Argyll made his estate census, Duncan was not married. It is most probable that he later did marry, raising the possibility that he may be the Duncan listed as being father of: Hugh (b. Apr. 6, 1800), John (b. Apr. 12, 1803), Elizabeth (b. Dec. 7, 1805), Barbara (b. Dec. 21, 1806), Christy (b. Feb. 9, 1809). These children were all born in Kilcalmonel Parish, giving indication that Duncan may have moved north. The wife and mother has not been determined.
