THE BIRTH OF THE ISLAY GRAVESTONE INFORMATION DATABASE

As a researcher of Islay history and genealogy for decades, I have accumulated information about Islay gravestones from personal visits, available transcriptions and online friends. Whenever I needed to access information, this led to searches through piles of papers and FRUSTRATION...there had to be a better way! My love of Islay encourages me to continue to save its history as I am able from a distance. Won’t you join the effort?  Sue (McCuaig) Visser

Walking through Islay cemeteries, you cannot help but worry about the loss of historical information by the deterioration of the stones by the lichen

Ancient groundstones found at Loch Finlaggan.   Members of the Lords of the Isles family were buried here. The Lords are buried at Iona

Kildalton Cross

Kildalton Cross is the only surviving complete Celtic High Cross in Scotland. It was carved about AD 800 from local blue stone that resists the growth of lichen, unlike most other gravestones

How tragic it would be to lose the beauty or the information from Islay gravestones!!!
