Elizabeth Anderson of Prestopans, Midlothian. He was a mining engineer in S. Africa. He'd come home every 2 years and get Elizabeth pregnant, then leave. The day he retired, she moved to NZ or Aust. His parents were William Gilchrist and Petra Howison. He owned a hotel in a town between Prestwick and Sanquhar. Had 3 brothers who owned hotels and 3 who were ministers. Her parents were Margaret and William Anderson.Margaret claimed there was a family tie to Lady Hamilton and Lord Nelson.

My name is Warwick Gilchrist, I come from a town called Oamaru on the east coast of the South Island of New Zealand. My family has a long association with the Oamaru area with my G G grandfather John, moving from Scotland in the 1870's. He was a stone mason of some repute and was responsable for a large number of the historical buildings in, and around the town. We don't have a lot of info on John's family in Scotland prior to the final shift to NZ. What we do know is that he left his wife in Scotland while he checked out both America and South Africa, he completed stone work in both countries. the guess is that he was visiting family contacts while on this "expedition" He then returned to Scotland and transported his family to NZ. Gilchrists had settled in Oamaru before John arrived with the firs tMayor of the town (1864) being a Gilchrist, so it would seem that again John was following up family connections. My family tree stuff is still at home in New Zealand, so I will have to pull that out later on in case anybody is interested in the gory details. For now I live in Lennox Head on the East Coast of Australia with my family (Wife and Daughter) and am looking at delving deeper into our scottish history which is why I am writing this. I will post some more details of John Gilchrist later on when I get the paper work from NZ.

Have just enjoyed your pages-- excellent and only hoped I could have found a connection but 'tho they probably were all related at one time, cannot find 'my' Gilchrists. They came to Puslinch Twp, Ontario from KILLEAN, Kintyre in1840's and called settlement Killean. I was born and raised in that area. A lot of Johns, Williams, Archibalds, Duncans etc etc. Have an old family note stating that "Duncan G. married Mary McMurchie, and had Duncan, Peter (my gr/gr/grf) William - (went to Australia and drowned) Archibald and on and on and on !!!

The stories are that our family ancestors came to Texas in the early 1800's. We know nothing for sure of our grandfather's background. His name was Ryden Grigsby Gilchrist, born 1-15-1865, died 1-15-1915. My father was a junior. We don't know much about the family except some hand-me-down stories. One is they came from North or South Carliona a long time ago. They spelled the last name several diferent ways, such as Gilchrease. Gilcrease & Gilchriest. I suspect they spelled it the way it sounded and many had no or little education. My grandmother was a Hanson. I suspect Grigsby is in the background too. She said the family came from Kansas. We're scattered all over.

Do you know where I might find info on John Gilchrist 1721-1790, or a Duncan Gilchrist possibly his brother, they had signed a lease for 19 years in 1757 for Corputechan Farm in Scotland, the property was then passed to William Gilchrist 1758-1813.

One of my family names is Kilcrease. Now there didn't use to be any doubt as to how it was spelled but lately some doubt has been brought to the surface. Always it was spelled as Kilcrease - but in some old papers we found recently it stated that it used to be spelled Killchrist. Could be a misspelling of Gil(or Gill)christ? Anyway I was told from time beginning by my grandfather of a Castle Kilcrease - always thought it was in Ireland but he also insisted that we were Scotch/Irish (and sooooooo orange) so maybe it's in Scotland (if it even exsists). What do you think? The first person I know of with the name Kilcrease/Gilchrist was David Kilcrease Hays born 1815 Tenn. Married Manerva Mark Jackson. Lived in Maury County and died in 1895. He was my grandfather's g-grandfather. My mother's brother is also named David Kilcrease Hays. Any Thoughts?

I am looking for information on William Gilchrist, born about 1819/1822 in Scotland. I have found a record of a brother John living in Muirkirk, Ayrshire, Scotland, and who died there in 1887, so it is possible William at some point lived there too. He also had a brother Thomas T. William married Marion Brown also of Scotland about 1847 .They had a son David born in 1848, and when David was a few months old moved to America, settling in Elizabeth, Pa. (and surrounding area) They had 7 sons in all - David, John, Charles (my ancestor), William, Thomas, Daniel & Hugh. William died Nov 29, 1877. Marion on March 2, 1893. I really would like to find out more about both William and Marion, their background in Scotland, who their parents were, etc. I know Thomas T. worked as a games keeper on a large estate, but don`t know where. And Thomas T. also immigrated to Pa. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
