the Civil War Era
Prisoner of War Experience
One of the darker sides of this war was the fate of those
people, men and some women, captured and taken prisoner in the line of duty.  Conditions in these institutions were often terrible, in both Confederate and Union facilities. About 56,000 men were prisoners of war, and it is estimated that about 14% of all captives died while incarcerated. This site is dedicated to the memories of all our ancestors whose lives were touched by these dark places, and we hope to shed some light on a subject that is often neglected.
