THOSE FIGHTIN' KIN 1998, by Robert Stanley Orrell MATTHEW A. KNIGHT 1st Lieutenant Company G, 2nd Florida Calvary Captain Company H, 9th Florida Infantry Matthew was my 3rd great grand uncle and was born on 20 October 1826 in Lowndes County, Ge orgia, the son of Captain Jonathan and Elizabeth Hannah (Tucker) Knight. Matthew moved to Flo rida in 1844. ... Matthew served as 2nd Lieutent from July 1861 through May 1862 when the regiment was reorg anized. Matthew came back to Florida and joined Company H, 9th Regiment as a 1st Lieutenant . When the Captain of Company H was killed, Matthew was promoted to Captain of the company . He held this rank until November when he was elected to the Florida Legislature and resign ed to take office. He was discharged at Petersburg, Virginia in 1864. Matthew filed for a pension on certificate #A 10921 in Bradford County, Florida on 31 Jul y 1907. The pension was approved on 16 September 1907 for $150 per year. Matthew served as St ate Senator, Road Commissioner, School Board Member and Ferry Operator. He died in 1911 in Cl ay County, Florida PARADE OF MEMORIES A History of Clay County, 1976 Florida Arch Fredric Blakey p. 68 The April (1859) election resulted in the following taking office: Dr. M.J. Murphy, Ju dge of Probate; Matthew Knight, Clerk of the Circuit Court;..... p.112 (1872 election) The Republican deflection was more obvious for the positions of State S enator and Assemblyman. ...and Matthew A. Knight smothered William B. White for the Senatoria l position 219 to 87. p. 179 Albert S. Chalker had a ferry on the South Prong by 1873 and the Commissioners establ ished another ferry operation there on July 2, 1877, "for the use of the travaling publick. " Matthaw A. Knight ran the County ferry for a salary of $10.00 per month but evidently refu sed to keep the lighter in good repair. On October 13, 1881, the Commissioners ordered tha t a sign be placed at Knight's Landing declaring that the ferry was unsafe and that the Count y would not be liable for damages caused by any accident at the crossing. Knight refused to r epair the boat and service was discontinued until the County paid for the necessary repairs i n 1883. Knight resumed his service until October 5, 1885,...
