Norman fought in the Civil War as as member of Company G, First Regiment Connecticut Volunteers Heavy Artillery. He was mustered in on May 22, 1861, re-enlisted on November 11, 1863, promoted to corporal on May 24, 1864, and wounded at Petersburg, VA on August 5, 1864. He was mustered out on September 25, 1865.
