"Among the original records belonging to the Baltimore Yearly Meeting of Friends, of which I am custodian, none is more frequently consulted than the book containing the earliest records of Friends in Nansemond and Isle of Wight counties, VA. This is probably largely due to the fact that Nansemond county was in early days largely peopled by the Puritan and the Quaker, and that the court and land records of this county were years ago destroyed by fire, and therefore any genealogical data relating to its residents is now eagerly sought after."

"Numerous pages have been in whole or in part cut out and doubtless muich valuable material has thereby been lost, some entries are almost illegible and through constant use this old book has become so worn that it cannot last much longer if continually used. And therefore with the permission of the meeting, IO have had the genealogical matter contained therein copied, and through the courtesy of these Publications now present the same to the public."

"The original spelling of all names and places has been carefully preserved and it will be noticed that the same name is often spelled differently in different entries."

Chuckatuck Monthly Meeting (also called Nansemond Monthly Meeting) Established prior to 1672 and discontinued in 1737 gives geographical information; the counties within bounds of this monthly meeting: nansemond, Isle of Wight, Upper and Lower Norfolk, Norfolk, Southampton, Surry, Princess Anne, Prince George, Sussex and Dinwiddie. However, the Chuckatuck record has been largely dismissed because it cannot be definitely identified as to the proper kind of meeting it was, monthly, quarterly etc. Of note however, is the fact that on the first page of the old book we find the following: "This book gegan with the yeare 1673 by the motion or order of George ffox the servant of God". It should be noted however, that some of its data precedes this date by a number of years, the earliest being 1647, which is the birth date of a chiuld of Thomas and Alice Hollowell of Elizabeth River.
